32 gun frigate WIP

it's not the acheron. though it would be a possibility.

i think the boarding thing is already being worked on.

Black hull with maroon paint along the gunports is the basic scheme, then come the details...
Usually trimmings and scrollwork on the bow and stern were yellow (or gold if the captain had enough pocket money to do so).
That is the biggest factor in a paint scheme - the captain. The yards would turn the new ships out with the basic sheme above, and then it was up to the captain to embellish upon it by painting over the scrollwork with gold or painting anything else.
When it comes to the gunport lids... again, it depends on the captain's preference, admiral's preference if it is part of a fleet, or the yard in which it was built. The tops could be black or maroon, undersides usually red to match the interior. (The interiors were painted red so the blood wouldn't stand out and discourage the crews.)
Masts are natural wood with black bindings, tops, and yards. Decks are usually natural-finish wood. (The British sanded theirs to make them brighter and the Americans painted them black.)

I think creating multiple skins would be easy... make a base of black and white (which is the easiest color to change... not to mention American *wink*) that way all you have to do is select the white and change the color in the Gimp.

Any other questions? I can tell you other things about British and American schemes... *big grin*

looking good, one more useful tip for you, thats only if you modeler program can do it. make the mesh 1 sided. this will help with making sure lighting on the hull is not reversed. If not I can do it while I convert her over.

Black and white? No way, that frigate isn't an American design you know.
Give it the typical Black with yellow trim of the british navy, with red/copper underside.

Thanks a ton for the info, CJPJ! I´ll probably make two textures, a complete white one with all details for easy retexturing (if you play/mod IL sturmovik, you know what I mean) and based on that, a french colour scheme (with changes, though, but she´ll be recognisable as a french ship)

Thanks, Inzane <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

With "make the mesh one-sided", do you mean that the faces should be one-sided? If so, Blender is able to do that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Couple o´Q´s:

-How well does the storm engine handle intersecting faces? I´d have to redo the bowsprit if the engine doesn´t allow that (not
a very pleasant thought <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> )

-Can I use materials (glass for the windows and lamps, gold for the decorations etc)?

Sorry, MM, no copper plating, just white paint from the keel to the waterline. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" />

Okay, guys, a question for ya:

Should the inside of the cabin be visible? It´d look good, thats for sure, but I´d have to spend at least another 2000 polies to model the interior, so its a performance vs "coolness" debate. Any suggestions?

Regards,
Bava

Here's an idea that solves that: How do they make the sword blades shine? What if we applied the same to the panes of glass?

And I thought this was a model of the earliest colonial-built ship? I merely suggested white because you can easily change the color to make different skins... its harder to change yellow to maroon than it is to change white to maroon.

Good thinking, but I´have no idea if that´d work. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

It is, she was built the 1740s, so in reality she´d have featured the Royal Navy colour scheme of the time, if any. But whats really puzzling me is that is just Boston in the draughts and not HMS Boston. Perhaps she was built for a privateer or well-to-do merchant? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wacko:" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

Indeed...

At any rate... she'll be perfect to play the part of the <i>Ranger</i> in my game... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Skip the interior of the cabin, it might be cool but how often do you look inside? Even the most graphics intense pirate game to date, Pirates of the Burning Sea with its ultra detailed ships do not have cabain interiors modeled on the ship model.

You´re probably right, I already made the various sections of the cabin and they´re small -as in reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally small-, too small to show anything interesting (besides the extension of the rudder you can see through the window in the middle, lol).

Yes the faces should be one sided. after you do this some parts will look inverter, just flip those polys. As for intersecting faces,I have used them before on the Surprise, I don't recall having any issues. and finally materials, those don't work at all in game they just show up gray shaded . I wish it did work. so this really relies on doing a proper texture to make up for this short coming. I been trying to figure out how to do a nice glossy cannon. not luck yet. the swords in game have this effect. it just wont work at sea..

Ohh before I forget. there is really no need to do the cabin. but this is where I would decide to make 2 versions of the ship. So do one with and one without. that should end the debate <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Good you mention the "flipping". I almost got a heart attack after I´ve made all the faces one-sided and some parts suddenly became black. Modder noobs are scared easily if something unexpected happens. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

This is <i>really</i> good news, the thought of having to redo the bowsprit gave me nightmares.
It´s a pity materials dont work, though, I found the perfect formula to make gold ( a pirate´s dream come true. ARRGGGH!!) <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Btw, I updated the first post with new pics, if you spot errors/oddities, please let me know. I used reference pics for most of the stuff on the deck, so I´m not really sure if all is correct.

Looking good, lighting looks alot better. model looks tight. here is one more tip, when you make your guns, make in a separate file, and use the same textures, so when you make other models you can keep reusing the guns and save time with not having to keep retexturing. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Good, I love the ship designs of the 1650 - 1700s´, so working on a small galleon would be a real joy for me. Btw, the vessel I originally wanted to model was a dutch double-decker ( the "Prins Wilhelm", 64 cannons, built in the 1670s´) but it turned out to be <i>a bit</i> too ambitious for a modelling noob, so I settled for the Boston (and I´m very happy with that decision now <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> ).

Bava

Edit: updated the first post with new pics (just some minor changes, though). critiscism and suggestions are welcome, of course.

i like the earlier galleons better, actually. those from the late 1500's, with the two lateens and even topsail and topgallant lateens. (though i prefer having one lateen on a mast) you could try looking at the french galleon Saint Louis. that's a nice one, and relatively modern for a galleon.

Too "blocky" for my taste, I prefer the more elegant, curved lines of later periods. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Btw, this is the small galleon I mentioned in my previous post:

<img src="http://img30.picoodle.com/img/img30/4/2/7/f_002nm_778511f.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

<img src="http://img34.picoodle.com/img/img34/4/2/7/f_006m_214bc19.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I finally found her original plan, not as detailed as the one for the Boston, but good enough

<img src="http://img01.picoodle.com/img/img01/4/2/7/f_2m_9f68c69.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

that's more or less what i meant, though smaller. the drawing plan looks like it's from the first half of the 1600's.
