YOUR CHARACTER AND SHIP

I've settled into being a Dutch Merchantman. I wear Dutch clothes and sail a Spiegelretourschip with a flush deck Frigate for an escort. It's a good combination of visibility, cargo size, speed, maneuverability, durability, and hitting power with 32 pound carronades.

I is jest startin' dis game mates ans I aint got so fur as i is on wit udder things as well, but i's read sumwear dat ye 'as t'fight de bosun as long as ye can in de trainin' in order t'get as many points as ye can's wit de sword...eh? :ixi

It's not necessary to do that, but it can't hurt. Until you get sore fingers from the swordfighting, that is. :razz

here's my ship i don't know whats its name, i think im bug i can't turn it to the left or right just forward gr!!

You can't steer? How bizarre. Have you checked the controls, to make sure the right keys are assigned? :?

i can't steer, tried swapping ships but it wont let me, i bought another one but that ship wont steer also, this made my game unplayable so i have to start another game, hard letting go of that save game because i have 2 man o wars :(

Ah! A mystery. :nerbz

Is the steering the only problem, or are other things whacko also? For instance, does the spyglass work? My first suggestion would be to go into your POTC folder and find the "options" folder. Deep six it. Start POTC and redo all of your options. Sometimes it takes several tries before it "takes" and your controls start working properly. Happy sailing! :sail

what i did is start another character :D no more problem steering :D

It seems I have similar tastes as Mr. Armada - i.e., English frigates with yellow and black paint schemes. ;)

Aye, mateys!

Nothing beats the Improved Xebec at least in me sights, yarrrr.

So fast and maneuverable, that it really gives ye a blast - and these nasty 18-pound-carronades full of chain and grape shot'll give THEM a BLAST as well. :D

Recently I captured a 1st Rate Ship of the Line and a 2nd Rate Barfleur Ship of the Line with my Improved Xebec (and my Sloop-of-War (also a great vessel) helped a little bit).

Now I cruise around with me hearty Xebec "Black Reaper" and me big-ass 1st Rate Ship of the Line "Revenant", the latter one I only armed with chain and grape shot for the sake of wussat... err... boardery. Yeah.

Arrrr! :D

Have fun, you guys, and happy plundering!

Hey, Pieter!

Ye remembered me. Great, mate!
I meself am better at dismembering pirate hunters, but well... me remember ye, too.
One could even consider me as a re-member, because I joined the party again.
Avast, me pun gun is never empty! ARRRR! ;)

Aye, it was truly ages that me an' me crew set sail to yer lovely port an' tavern... an' those times in between were not always ages of pirates, me must admit. ;)

But now I am back in business. I recently downloaded meself yer fresh and shiny New Horizons and I love it! :D
I had to step back from privateering due to a shi*p*load of work back then, when you guys had finished Build Mod 12.

Thanks and congratulations to all the mateys an' sea lasses out there who made this mod project possible!
Ye absolutely shiver me timbers! Arrrrr. ;)

New Horizons is great stuff, as addictive as the infamous Mr. Roger's Rascal Rum - the only rum that consumes pirates!

By the way:
I could just play for a day or so and then I had to start coding again. :D

I added two dialog options to the tailor_dialog for easy customization to suit my needs (I play with AUTO_SKILL_SYSTEM disabled, because good ol' skill point distribution is more to me liking):

- Option 1 adds a predefined set of the outfits I like best to the selection at no cost.

- Option 2 lets the player choose to reset all perks and skills of either:
a) only the main character,
b) the main character and his three companion officers,
c) only the three companion officers.

I can share the code, if you like.

Playtesting:

The "start a new life" (perk and skill reset for main character for 5000 gold+) dialog doesn't work pretty well with the Learning-by-Doing-Mod enabled due to obvious reasons.
Every skill is reset to one and you can't spend skill points in the AUTO_SKILL_SYSTEM... so "Hoooorah!". ;)

Maybe a check should be added near line 146 of Father Bernard_dialog.c (didn't test it though):

Code:
// -- Scheffnow -- 2004-01-14 -- ResetCharacterMod -- start -----------
        if(!AUTO_SKILL_SYSTEM)
        {
            Link.l98 = DLG_TEXT[134];
            Link.l98.go = "ResetCharacterDialog";
        }
// -- Scheffnow -- 2004-01-14 -- ResetCharacterMod -- end -------------

After line 794 of Father Bernard_dialog.c there is one perk missing (Toughness) and should be added:

Code:
  if ( IsCharacterPerkOn(PChar,"Toughness") )  { intFreePerks++; }

After line 838 of Father Bernard_dialog.c there is one perk missing (Toughness) and should be added:

Code:
  DeleteAttribute(PChar,"perks.list.Toughness");

Happy swashbuckling and plundering, ye salty sea dogs! :)

Good catch on those Father Bernard code changes. That indeed makes a lot of sense! :onya

Ahoy!

In fact: There is a ship that simply kicks the planks out of the Improved Xebec just considering maneuverability...

As I played on in the quest line in a new game of "Tales of a Sea Hawk" you receive the Flushdeck Frigate "La Boussole" as a kind of quest reward... I don't want to spoil too much.

Getting such a superior ship pretty much at the start of the game feels strange to me, because with this ship you simply own the High (and Low and even the Mediocre) Seas.

The maneuverability of the Flushdeck Frigate "La Boussole" is insane - I suppose it is around 85... while an Improved Xebec reaches around 60 at best.
Maybe this has to do with the overall reduction of maneuverability for *all* ship types due to being more realistic... which was a very good game design decision you, the mod crew, made.

But I suppose this unique ship has been forgotten in the maneuverability reduction process. May that be the case?

If so: No harm done, no offense meant, I am just pointing out the things I notice and give feedback - as always. ;)

I don't have to tell you, that the overall stats of the Flushdeck Frigate "La Boussole" are a total blast. Almost 500 crew members, 42 cannons of caliber 12... decent speed and a maneuverability straight outa hell - What more can a captain ask for?

But somehow the step from a Lugger to THIS ship appeared a little strange to me.
There were no ships in between except for the European Barque l'Oiseau you have to capture in the quest line...

Aaaaand I couldn't suppress the urge to attack merchant fleets, pirates and helping British warships against Spanish warships... before returning to Port Royale.
That gave me multiple Sloops-of-War, Xebecs, a Fluyt-of-War, a 5th-Rate-Warship, a Belladonna 3rd-Rate-Warship and a Raa Class Frigate, which are berthed ready at the shore of several islands. Weird. Da be bad mojo, mon! ;)

By the way: In the new game I switched to the learning-by-doing-skill-system, because it is obviously better - you don't have to take care of the skill point distribution and the danger of minmaxing is not really there anymore. :)

Drink up, me hearties, yoho! :D

That ship has been balanced together with the others, but I can understand that having her so early on is a bit of a cheat.
Of course you don't get to keep her, but still.... I wonder if we should auto-reload to Port Royal after you managed to escape or something?
That part of the quest has always been there, so it'd be difficult indeed to make any major changes there.

I like the flushdeck frigate as well. Mine also came from the French, though they did not give it willingly. :D I also raid enemy ships, finding something to attack on each trip from one port to another, though I don't berth the captured ships, I sell them. That got me enough money to fit all the upgrades, except ironically cut down superstructure, because that's only available from the pirates and they don't like me any more than the French do. The result may not have the super stats of the reward ship but it can still outrun and outturn pretty well anything else except some of the smaller ships, and then only if they're sailing almost into the wind.

The weirdest part comes, when you swap ships via "Ship Transfer".

The Flushdeck Frigate "La Boussole" is Ship 1 due to the quest line.
Let's say, you capture a Tartane and set one of your officers as captain for the Tartane.
Then you click "Ship Transfer" and swap the ships, so that "La Boussole" is Ship 2.

Then you return to Port Royale - the Governor takes back the Tartane instead of the Flushdeck Frigate "La Boussole", because the Tartane is Ship 1.
So, there is actually the possibility to simply keep "La Boussole" and terrorize the Seas from early on.

Maybe we should check that part of the quest line again and think of improvements.

Greetings!

LOL! Indeed, I can quite imagine that working. Quite an act of piracy!
Would be nice if that could be prevented, I agree.
