Who wants new guns?

Merciless Mark

Build mod - Master Gunner
Storm Modder
Well i was getting pretty fed up with the so unrealistic grey fakey metal texture of the stock guns on all the ships, so i used the texture i used for the new Surprise's guns and made a replacement texture, now all the guns on the default ship and on some third party ones look much more realistic in their iron black colors.

Also makes the Pearl more authentic too since she also has black guns in the movie.

<img src="http://alexraptor.com/images/newguns4.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
Pearls texture is a bit misaligned, due to it being a third party, might want to think of fixing that <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

So what says you mates? material for the build mod? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

well, it DOES look better. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> i only just realised that they should be black.

Sigh... and I had me guns so carefully textured... Anyway, I may make custom deck texture anyway, making this problem non-existant <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I've gotten so used to grey cannons, those look... so wrong <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

on second thought, they don't nearly look as good close-up. they're fine at a distance though. and what about the lugger VML cannons?

well to me cannons are supposed to be black, cannons that arent black arent real cannons IMHO well aside from brass and bronze guns perhaps :p but iron guns are black.

btw whats the problem with the closeup? if its the fuse hole we could just remove it and have regular black barrells instead of regular grey barrells.

well, the black just seems too plain. it's absolutely perfect black. there are no natural faults or damage in it whatsoever.

the lugger VML has bronze cannons. and very nice ones too.

Here's a wild thought - how about adding some kind of spark in this place during cannon discharge? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

well, would be nice, but there actually was a small puff of smoke coming out of the fuse-hole in reality. (i know this, i fired one)

i dont even know if its possible, there are two ways i can think of.

1.) new locators, probally impossible, most likley hardcoded.
2.) giving a particle system a negative position value, however this would require that every gon on every ship would be exactly the same size and have exactly the same locator.

Well, yeah, adding new locators would be too time-consuming. Stupid Akella, why couldn't they code it so the guns are added via locators, not part of the ships! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Giving a particle system a negative value is a more viable option, at least to me <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> and yeah, it certainly won't be perfect. Stupid Akella, why couldn't they code scalable guns! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Well, it was just a wild thought anyway. It's up to you whether you'd like to make some tests or not <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Now, back to the texture. I say, leave the fuse hole - since we need the texture anyway, some extra detail wont hurt. Also, "Captain, I think the crew, meaning me as well, were expecting something more... shiny." <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate_plain.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p3" border="0" alt="pirate_plain.gif" /> Yes, really. Those guns look to me rather... dull. Maybe try increasing the contrast a bit, to break the monotony <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

"Me likes da guns." , Boatswain Dumbnut while inspecting the new deck.

I have one off-topic question though: I noticed some of the big ships can actually carry 42 pounders - are those in game at all? If so, how to obtain them?

are you sure you didnt read wrong and it said 24? because the only thing with 42 pounders is Fort's or perhaps it was carrying carronades in which you can buy them in the shipyard i think?

no, it does say 42. in fact, i discovered that 68 pound cannons excist as well. i don't think they are used though.

The <i>Victory</i> carried 64 pounder carronades. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> But I think the heaviest on a ship would be 32 pounders on the lowest deck of a first rate. Anything bigger would go in a fort or the like. It would be cool to have a bomb ketch. Two 80 pounder mortars in the bows that use bomb shot. A really high angle of fire so you can sail right up under a fort and pound it.
<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

I think something that would add flair to the cannons would be black barrels and gun carriages that aren't just wood colored. Perhaps yellow orche carriages for RN ships and red carriages for other ships. It would add some color to the ship. Something that would add detail to the barrels would be the "King's Crown" engraved into the iron... and instead of a touch hole, a shiny brass flintlock firing mechanisim. I know its a little Napoleonic for those who want the late 16, early 1700s, but it would add detail that stands out.

fore some reason i imagine you talking with an english nobleman's accent. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> too much monty python i guess. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

dunno about that. could look good, or really bad. i'll need to see that in-game.

Getting back to the off-topic <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> : So, there is actually no sense in having ships with a maximum gun weight of > 32 pounds? Then it should be corrected. Otherwise it could be a cool idea to have some special quest where you get 42 pounders for your ship. Maybe this could be added to a "rob-the-fort" action. If your ship is strong enough and can carry > 32 pounders, you can have fort cannons dismantled and installed on your ship.

Now you mention it, the cannons I always see in real life are also black and not grey. I like the black. But I think they should have some more "scrubby" textures, because the texture of the cannons isn't smooth at all.

Now THAT would be an interesting idea. An easier way, though, would be to just have them on sale @ the shipyard, closed to "civilian" ship captains, but open to military captains or privateers. The screenshots below are some examples of the 68 pounders in action( and the aftermath of the action), just so we can all see that they do exist. In fact, some forts do carry them, too. If it were possible, rather than have new gun skins, I'd like to see a visible variation in size to distinguish the different calibers.
