What are today's best Pirate games?

Hi there,

I was a big AoP2 addict years ago and I was wondering what are the today's successors of this awesome game (PC only).

After some research I have heard about Hearts Of Oak from PA and Blackwake that both look very nice but are currently 'work in progress'. I have also noticed the incoming Sea of Thieves but it's not released and I don't know what to think about it yet. I had a look at Assassin Creed BF but that's definitely not what I'm looking for.

Is there great AoP2-like games I have missed?

Thanks for your advice !
Joe

PS: I found a very good one on Android called The Pirate Caribbean Hunt but I'm actually looking for PC (/Mac) games.

Well, for today, pirate games is not common. Try New Horizons mod for Pirates of the Caribbean and Gentelmen of Fortune for AoP2. This mods just bring old games to the new level of adventure and "corsair" feel.

But if you want something new - try "Space Rangers" this is open-world, space themed rpg where you can play as space pirate, good luck!

Thanks for your answer, I'll have a look at the Gentlemen of Fortune's mod that looks great.
"back to the roots back to the basics"

The saddest part is that the best pirate games are all fairly old.

Sid Meier's Pirates (any of them really.)
Age of Pirates (again, any of them, although I prefer Aop2 CoAS. PotC is extremely hard to find digitally.)
Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag (for the eyecandy if nothing else.)

uh... thats about it. Shame really.

AlexandreJoe, I asked myself the same thing some days ago, searched about it, and found the following: "Windward" and "Tempest" seem to be pretty good, there's the free to play "Wind of Luck Arena" that seems interesting, there's also "Port Royale 3" (2012) and "Vendetta - Curse of Raven's Cry" (2015), this last one seems to have been launched pretty unpolished, not optimized and buggy, it seems to have had the potential to be a great classic game on-launch (sounds like a certain game we all love... don't know if it's as modifiable as PotC though). I never played any of them, just looked them out.

I would definitely mention Naval Action as well, as they are making it open world.

It's still not finished but definitely playable. Battles are very good.

Then of course I would like to mention Tides of War: Letters of Marque that me and two other people from the PA community are making.

Vendetta: Curse of Ravens Cry has sooooo much potential, and looks rather good. But sadly (as mentioned) it's very buggy and feels unfinished - which basically is the truth. It also seems abandoned by its owners as very little info has been unearthed since it was "relaunched" and renamed to the current name of Vendetta - Curse of Ravens Cry.

I don't know if it is modable, but if it is it holds very promising features indeed and could have easily have been the new way to go for something like the New Horizons mod.

But - again- sadly I think the developers have burnt their bridges so badly with the players that supported the game, that no one will use time or bother moding of.

But I surely hope someone tries to mod it

Just saw two pirate multiplayer games that seem to be good ones, "Blackwake" and "Pirates of the Burning Sea".

Pirates of the burning sea is old. It used to be great, I played it very active for many years.

The company who first developed it went down the drain, and a few people from the original team bought the rights to it. The game had already been ruined by this point, and the new owners has just ruined it even more since... I don't recommend it at all - but then again... I am probably bias as I still miss "The good old days" of PotBS.

It was actually the fall of PotBS that drove me seaching for other Age of Sail or pirate games... which again led me to find this community ☺

Oh, I forgot to mention "Blood & Gold: Caribbean!", based on the "Mount & Blade: Warband" engine. Seems to be a decent one.

Yes! This is basically a sequel to Sid Meier's Pirates! The only thing missing are storms and uh.. dancing. :p Lots of features and things to do. I prefer it to Aop2 Vanilla myself.

Why aren't they doing AOP3? i guess pirate and ship sailing have smaller group of fans compared to shooting games that have sequel churning out every single year. I truly dislikes those science fiction laser beams tank and laser guns but it seem those are hottest genre in the market nowadays.

So sad, and i also liked medieval city building games which also have non existence production nowadays.

IMHO, AoP2 : CoAS is the full fledged pirate game even without mods. No successor to cover all its features and extra potentials yet
