Look out all you pocket knife wielding felons...

And Then They Came For The Knives

A proposed rule change to the Switchblade Act of 1958 (15 U.S.C. Section 1241) by the Customs and Border Protection agency (overseen by the Department of Homeland Security) would reclassify most folding knives that can be opened by one hand as "switchblades", making them a federal felony to own or carry.

Despite the usual statist dismissals that critics are blowing things out of proportion, the rule change is broad enough and vague enough (whoda thunk?) to include all knives using a spring to open. This includes Boy Scout knives, Swiss Army knives, bladed multi-tools, package openers and other ordinary pocket knives. And it is likely to pass through without challenge in less than 30 days. Already, an amendment to prevent the new language from being adopted has been shot down by the House Rules Committee.

This issue directly affects me. I always carry a small (or not so small) blade to open packages, cut things, scrape things and for all sorts of other uses. So did my father and his father before him. Besides being an issue of being caged and/or fined for owning and carrying a tool, it is also about stripping away the right of self-defense (which they've interfered plenty enough already with all the gun regulations). In case of an assault or a mugging, you're simply better off carrying a small knife (or pepper spray, taser or whatever you choose) that can be used defensively than someone who doesn't. Better to be a hawk with a single talon than a sitting duck.

Every week on this site we cover the increasing abuses of government from brutal acts of violence to nonconsensual theft via taxation to Big Brother networks of cameras monitoring our every move. With the recent events in Iran, it is crystal clear what happens to a defenseless, unarmed populace when abusive, authoritarian governments decide to silence those who refuse to kowtow as obedient hosts to the statist parasites. The last thing they want is citizens who have the will and the means to say no. First it was the guns, now it's the knives. What's next? Rocks?

For me, this fascist knife-grab crosses a personal line. Should this rule change go through, I will not abide by it. I will never surrender my right to own and carry my honestly-acquired property nor will I give up the right to defend myself as I see fit. Hoping that the police will show up quickly enough to do more than draw chalk outlines around my body is not acceptable.

If this issue is important to you, go buy yourself a bucket full of pocket knives and let CBP know they and their idiotic rules can go to hell. For more information on this issue, visit kniferights.org.

typical bureaucratic BS Lazarus! I agree 100%! They will have to pry my Buck and my Leatherman from my cold, dead fingers! That's how most of these laws get put into place to begin with, they word them just right to make them sound like it is something legit and needed, then when they actually get the law passed, the meanings completely change. And by that time, too much lobbyist money has changed hands, and to many votes have been bought off to get it repealed. Politicians, lawyers, bankers and lobbyists are all cut from the same cloth in my opinion.

QUOTE

Police: Conn. teens mishear sex screams, beat man
AP
By DAVE COLLINS, Associated Press Writer Dave Collins, Associated Press Writer – Thu Jul 2, 4:23 pm ET

HARTFORD, Conn. – A 16-year-old girl thought she heard her mother being assaulted by her boyfriend and rounded up some friends who beat him up, only to learn later that the couple actually were having sex, the woman and police said. The girl misinterpreted the woman's amorous screams, and she and four other teens went to the woman's bedroom in the Torrington home on June 6, police Lt. Bruce Whiteley said Thursday.

One of the teens beat the 25-year-old man with a bat and others punched him, police said. He suffered a black eye and several bruises.

The girl, two 17-year-old boys and Dilyen Langdeau, 19, of Torrington, were arrested Tuesday night and arraigned in Bantam Superior Court on Wednesday. Langdeau was charged with assault and conspiracy; the teens face similar counts. The fifth teenager was not charged.

A judge sealed the police report. The names of the girl and the two boys were not released because of their ages.

The 34-year-old woman, Melanie Arnold, told The Associated Press on Thursday that the girl is her daughter. Arnold denied she was screaming, and said her daughter thought she heard a slap and believed an assault was happening.

"Instead of asking what was going on, they assumed and took matters into their own hands," Arnold said. "Now they have to learn a lesson."

The teens knocked on the bedroom door and Arnold opened it, according to the couple, who recently broke up.

The teens rushed into the room and the man, Roger Swanson, said he didn't have a chance to explain himself. He said he tried to get away, but the teens chased him down and started beating him in the house.

He said he knelt down over a chair and tried to protect his face, but got hit in the eye and in the back. He said Arnold covered his back to try to protect him, but the teen with the bat started hitting him in the legs. Then the youths left.

"What if they fight someone else and those guys don't walk away? What if they kill somebody?" he said. "Then they're going to spend the rest of their lives in jail. These kids need to learn, go through the court system and see if you do something to somebody, you see what happens."

David Begnaud ELK GROVE, Calif
At least one family discovered the explicit material when they played the DVD at home.

A local teacher accidentally put pornography into a DVD that was meant to be filled with school memories from the past year, and nobody caught the error until after it was sent home, shocking parents and students alike.

Parents of students who attend Isabelle Jackson Elementary said that the woman is a good teacher, but just made a mistake that may become the most embarrassing moment of their life.

The offending DVD starts with a menu screen that displays various school trips and functions, and when you click on one of them, you see kids in a classroom sharing stories. They start clapping, then the video suddenly cuts to sex.

"It goes from my son, straight to her on the couch," said 'Joe,' who saw the video along with his son and did not wish to be identified. "My son's reaction was, 'Dad, is that Ms. Defanti?'"

"We were up till midnight doing the 'birds and the bees,'" he added.

The person in the video turned out to be Isabelle Jackson Elementary fifth grade teacher Crystal Defanti.

"All she could say was that it was a horrible mix up," Joe said.

The teacher called his home the day after his child got the DVD, crying hysterically, profusely apologizing and asking the man and his wife to call every parent they knew to stop their kids from seeing the DVD too.

The Elk Grove Unified School District says they are investigating, but legal experts say it's unlikely that the teacher will lose her job.

"It's felony stupid, but it's not a crime," said defense expert Ken Rosenfeld. "Is it something that she should be disciplined for? Absolutely, but fired for? She didn't intend for this to happen."

Joe doesn't care if the teacher keeps her job, he'd just like some help from the school.

"Maybe offer some sort of counseling for my children, ask me how my children are doing," he said. "I want somebody to ask me the kind of questions my kids are asking me."

School officials say a new DVD will be sent to students once it has been reviewed.

Nine Officers Purchased 113-Year-Old Bakery

POSTED: 11:17 am EDT July 3, 2009
UPDATED: 4:24 pm EDT July 3, 2009

CLARE, Mich. -- A few Mid-Michigan police officers are creating the ultimate cliché.

When the Clare Police Department got word that their beloved bakery and doughnut shop was shutting down, the department decided to buy it.

The guys ribbed for spending too much time at doughnut shops outright bought one and they’re getting a lot of smirks and raised eyebrows from customers.

It turns out the previous owners were running low on dough and were just weeks away from folding up the 113-year-old bakery.

So to everyone’s surprise and muted laughter, Clare’s nine fulltime cops saved the town’s doughnut shop.

Now creampuffs and handcuffs – in a sense – go hand in hand, giving the phrase ‘protect and serve’ more than a dozen glazed, sprinkled or custard-filled meanings.

The officers will volunteer their time and won’t be getting paid.

The store will be staffed by college and high school students.

The donut store is also selling apparel through their Web site.
