<b><!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo-->Couple charged with wedding-night murder<!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec--></b>

06:00 AEST Wed May 20 2009

<b>A pair of British newlyweds are accused of murder after a violent confrontation that occurred after the bride slept with another man on her wedding night. </b>

Groom Barry Johnson and his new wife Wendy Shobrook allegedly beat George Auchterlonie to death after he spent the night with the bride, a court has heard.

Ms Shobrook, 39, had allegedly walked out on her 40-year-old husband just hours after the service because she believed he was not paying her enough attention. He had left the reception to pick up his welfare from a nearby unemployment centre.

The couple then had an argument at home that resulted in Ms Shobrook setting fire to Mr Johnson's bed and then allegedly running into the arms of Mr Auchterlonie.

But the following morning she phoned her husband and claimed his 45-year-old Auchterlonie tried to rape her, the court heard.

Ms Shobrook then allegedly let Mr Johnson into his love rival's flat where he savagely beat the father of four with an oar and a glass.

Both newlyweds reportedly took part in the beating that left the Plymouth man with 38 separate injuries.

He was left lying in a pool of his own blood and was not seen again until his dead body was discovered three days later.

"I kicked hell out of him and broke a glass over his head. There was claret everywhere. I gave him a bloody good hiding," Johnson allegedly boasted to friends, the Daily Mail reports.

The prosecution claims that Ms Shobrook deliberately set up her lover for the beating by concocting a rape story and allowing her husband access to the victim's home in June last year.

They alleged that she had been involved in a sexual relationship for a period leading up to their spur-of-the-moment wedding, which took place at a register office in front of three friends.

The trial continues.

<b><!--sizeo:2--><span style="font-size:10pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo-->Man pushes would-be suicide off bridge<!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec--></b>
Mon May 25, 2009 11:56am EDT

BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese man was pushed off a bridge by an angry passer-by after his threat to commit suicide held up traffic for five hours, Chinese media reported on Saturday.

Retired soldier Lian Jiansheng, 66, broke through a police cordon and reached out to shake the hand of would-be jumper Chen Fuchao before shoving him off the bridge.

"I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish. Their action violates a lot of public interests," Lai was quoted as saying by the China Daily newspaper.

"They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities' attention to their appeals."

Chen, 2 million yuan ($293,200) in debt because of a failed building project, fell 8 metres (yards) onto a partially inflated emergency air cushion and was hospitalized with wrist and back injuries. Lai was detained by police.

Chen was at least the twelfth person since early April to threaten suicide at the same spot, the Haizhu bridge in Guangzhou. But none jumped and -- until Lian gave Chen a helping hand -- none was pushed.

Associated Press - May 23, 2009 12:25 PM ET

FORESTBURGH, N.Y. (AP) - A Connecticut man is recovering from shotgun wounds sustained in a hunting mishap in southern New York.

Authorities say Henry Gasiorowski, of Greenwich, Conn., was hit in the arm and back by shotgun pellets in the Friday morning accident at a hunting club in Forestburgh.

The Sullivan County Sheriff's office says the 60-year-old was sitting behind a decoy turkey making turkey calls when a hunting companion from Greenwich mistakenly opened fire.

Gasiorowski was hospitalized, but his injuries were not life-threatening. Police are investigating.

<b>Driver who claimed he's his own country is sentenced</b>
Associated Press
May 15, 2009, 3:29PM

EASTON, Pa. — A man who previously claimed Pennsylvania courts have no jurisdiction over him because he's his own country has been sentenced to jail.
A Northampton County judge sentenced 44-year-old Scott Allan Witmer to three days to six months in jail Friday and fined him $2,500 for driving under the influence.
In March, Witmer appeared in court wearing a Coors Light sweatshirt and said Pennsylvania laws didn't apply to him because he is a "sovereign man." Later, he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence.
On Friday, Witmer acknowledged it was "definitely wrong" for him to drive on the night of his arrest.

<b><!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo-->Police: Conn. woman bitten after 'bite me' remark<!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec--></b>

MERIDEN, Conn. – An instructor at the Connecticut Police Academy has been charged with disorderly conduct after he allegedly responded literally to a co-worker's "bite me" remark. Francis Woodruff, a former Waterbury police captain, was arraigned Tuesday and released on a promise to appear in court.

He was accused of biting the arm of 42-year-old Rochelle Wyler, a license and applications analyst at the academy, on April 24.

According to the arrest report, she was left with teeth marks and bruising on her left triceps.

Wyler filed a complaint April 28, alleging the 51-year-old Woodruff was agitating her by calling her a clerk. She said she responded with "bite me" — and he did.

Woodruff, who also is a training co-ordinator with the Meriden Police, told authorities he was joking around.

<i>...Hmmm, yeah nice joke, "with teeth marks and bruising on her left triceps..."</i>
