USS Enterprise

Commodore John Paul Jones

Commodore in the Continental Navy
Storm Modder
Here she is ladies and gentlemen - the USS <i>Enterprise</i>!

<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/_Commodore_John_Paul_Jones/Iso_2.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/_Commodore_John_Paul_Jones/Iso_4.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/_Commodore_John_Paul_Jones/Gundeck_1.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I need to do the following:
Rescale the shroud's deadeyes.
Add swivels to the rails.
Add a launch to the stern davits.
Add gratings to the gun deck.

Some of the rigging may be off, but that's for the look, as I know all the rigging and sails will be replaced with those used ingame.

I haven't actually skinned her with good textures either, so if anyone wants to give that a try, you're welcome to it.

Good job, Commodore! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

one technical correction:

your foremast rig isn't quite possible. like it is now, the topsail bracelines won't clear the top gaff and boom when they swing out. the topsail braces should be attached further up the mainmast, the top gaff removed, and the upper boom lowered. correct me if i'm wrong! it's very well possible that the foremasts' fore-to-aft rig was never meant to be braced very far.

I built the hull and placed the masts with the blueprints, but I had to rig her from memory, as it was in class.
I found this:
<img src="http://www.privateerlynx.com/begin/drawing_masting_rigging600.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Looks like those lines still hinder the sail's movement, but I still got the rig wrong. At any rate, I threw it together for the pictures... I know most of that, all maybe save the shrouds, will be replaced with rigging for use in the game.

I'm kind of thinking that the idea was that the foresail's movement is limited, so it can't swing out as far, but the square topsail makes up for it. Plus the topsail adds a little speed running before the wind, and the topsail can easily swing pretty far in either direction.

I'll have to fix that stuff. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

indeed. very interesting. i was half right, in the end. maybe you should get a few more sources to see if there's other ways they did it.

So, wait, wait... Is this the <i>USS Enterprise</i> built in 1799? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Aye. This is how the <i>Enterprise</i> would have looked between 1801 and 1812. In May of 1801 she was re-armed from 12 to 14 guns and re-rigged from schooner to topsail schooner. In May of 1812 she was re-rigged again to a brig.
Now I have her painted in the classic black/white scheme... that's probably how she would have looked post 1805. Prior to 1805 she most likely sported a black/yellow ochre scheme to match Commodore Preble's squadron while in the Med. fighting the Barbary pirates. But of course after October 21st, 1805 the black/yellow ochre scheme was forever bound to the Royal Navy, and tensions leading to the War of 1812 spurred most of the United States Navy to switch from yellow ochre to white, as to not associate themselves with the British in any way.

Wow. What a perfect timing <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> (My <i>Enterprise</i> is also supposed to be the one from 1799, in case someone doesn't know)

And, boy, does she look weird or what? That high bulwarks, and... is it just me, or every American ship I've seen so far has awful looking bow? The <i>Constitution</i> had a nice bow, but then they went and rebuilt it, like, three times, and now it looks ugly <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Oh well... Anyway, as resident poly-concious nagger, I'm almost afraid to ask about polycount, especially after seeing those cannons, which sure look like they have modelled every screw and nail <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> And I must confess that anchor rope looks rather weird to me.

Those anchor lines bug me too. Don't worry, she's not finished. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I'll have to get a polycount on her... I used the program "DelftShip" to model the basic shape of her hull, so she has a relatively low polycount in that regard... the polys skyrocket with the guns and other stuff. That's why I was guessing that most of the other details, like the guns, anchors, etc. will be replaced with ones from the in-game models. In the end, none of the sails and rigging will make it into the game, as we can use our trusty tools to assign "ropes".

You talking about the enclosed bow? I actually find it quite nice, as it really marks a ship as one of American design. That and its a Napoleonic trait too... which helps to visually set ships used in The Corsican era apart from others.

Hey guys, could someone post up some images or links for sail textures? I know ShortJackGold made some a while ago but I can't find 'em. I think the POTBS sails would be good ones.

I'm applying textures to her now, so she's starting to look a lot better. Only frustrating thing is that I can't seem to turn the planking textures on their sides without disorting the images and making them all nasty and pixelated. So for now the planks are nailed vertically to the sides of the hull. :p (I even tried turning the pic on its side in MS Paint)

The underhull and deck planks looks great though! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Uh? Even rotating the texture doesn't help? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />
As for the sails, personally I like using bright white sails on US ships, but I attached both the weathered (PotBS) and bright white (AoP) sails to this post,
so you can take your pick. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
Don't you have the game anymore? Those files are included in the game of course. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wacko:" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

I have the game, but I haven't loaded it onto my new Dell Studio 15 laptop. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Thanks for uploading the white sail texture. I'll geve it a try too. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

You may need to set the planking texture to repeat to get rid of the distortions, Commodore. Remember that a hull is much longer than it is high, and though the texture may look okay when rotated one way, depending on how the texture is set to be applied to the surface, it may not look so good if it is being stretched to fit another way.

Cap'n Drow

I'm tiling the texture, but I can't get it to tile lengthwise like it should. When I try to rotate it or set the texture to apply via XY or YZ, it simply warps the planks in an odd diagonal curve.

Are you applying the texture like a box or a cylinder or something else?

Most strange. What program are you using to model with?

And Pieter is right, double-check the way you are applying the texture. Because of the shape of the hull, you may want to apply it as a cylinder.

I'm using 3ds max 9.

I made the hull in DelftShip and exported it as a .obj, imported to 3ds, and converted it to an editable poly.

I used DelftShip because its actually intended for modeling ship and boat hulls, and is therefore easier to use than trying to make a hull in 3ds. In addition, I know my hull is 100% accurate because DelftShip will tell me the hull's displacement, whether there is too much weight on the bow and stern that could cause hogging, and if there are any other flaws in its design. All in all, the hull you see in my screenshots perfectly matches the draft. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Delftship is a lowpoly and easy way to model the hull. The endresult always looks fantastic!

I tried modeling a ship in that program a couple of times. But it was impossible to model after the drawings, the program distorted the original lines completely. Maybe you found a way out of that, the hull sure looks nice from here CJPJ <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Ugh... how come I didn't know about this program until now? It would definitely come in handy for modelling. I request, nay, I <b>demand</b> a link to DelftShip in tools thread! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

It appears to be a matter of taste, then <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Personally, comparing American bows with other, I find them rather... dull <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Ok, when putting a ship in-game... what exactly is built by the modeler that goes in-game? Just the hull and masts? If so, then I'm ready to hand her over to someone. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
Whoever wants to put her in-game should post or PM me their e-mail. Then I'll open my model and delete all the masts and rigging and save it as a seperate file, which will be e-mailed to the lucky guy who gets to put her in the water.
I've applied textures to her... so I'm not sure if we really need a skin... unless someone wants to.
