Treasure Maps!!! ARGHHHHH!!!

Coconut Monkey

Landlubber
Hey Guys,

Im having real troubles with reading the maps and were to go to find the treasure.

Has anybody had this problem before????

Thanks <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Usually the map will say, East/SouthEast etc of Somewhere somewhere, and will have a coastline, and maybe even a landmark, like Skull Shallows, etc. First, go to the city that is mentioned in the map, then go to the direction it says. If there is a landmark, use that as the starting point. Use the telescope (rightclick, then position it about middle the screen, then move it left or right) to see if there are any landmarks in the distance, like arches, totem poles, and so on. When you do reach a landmark, and if it is on the map, then look for the next landmark using the telescope.

Treasures are basically a pile of rocks with a crude cross erected on it and skulls hanging from the cross. When you get closer, the skull and crossbones "painted" on the rocks start "glowing".

The hardest part for people at first is getting used to the compass, I think. To be honest, the compass sucks on land. Thats why I never really use it anyway, just keep good situational awareness when on land.

Treasure Maps

I'm still checking this out, but I feel there may be a trend where maps are concerned. It may not be this way at Swashbuckler level, but it seems like there's always an Indian village near the location of a Lost City, at least in the general vicinity. And it seems like each time I defeat the Baron, wherever I defeat him seems to be the area I find missing family. Pirate treasures seem to be in the vicinity of that pirate's home pirate haven. And the last time I defeated the Marquis, his fortress was in the same area I defeated him at. Using those theories allowed me to find the fortress and a lost relative with only a quarter of a map during the last game. So I will admit it may have been blind luck and I haven't been focused on that enough to learn for sure. I defeated the Marquis near Campeche and found his fortress east of Campeche in the Bay of Honduras. There was just enough map information to give me an idea where to look, and it seems there was always a landmark in the water in the general vicinity as well. If I find I'm insane I'll report back. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

On easier levels, the treasures etc. tend to be in the vicinyty of the place where you acquired the first map piece. Not that way on higher levels, though.

Navigation on land:

Just use the compass. It actually is your best help. Take care to note where on the shoreline you have landed and where, approximately, you are in relation to your treasure map / treasure. You get the general direction to go from them (east, `south-east`, `south-south`-east). Then merely follow the guidance of the compass to get there.

Also, it seems to me that the treasures are always rather close to one of those "landmarks at sea/lake", even if your treasure map does not have one on it, or even a shoreline, for that matter. So, if your map says "North of Vera Cruz", don't start walking north from Vera Cruz. Just sail along the coast until you find the next landmark and go ashore there.

About the compass:

Remember that the compass works like a REAL compass, not like the generic game compasses. The arrow ALWAYS points north, so if you want to go to east, the arrow must point to your left.

I had a game in which my lost uncle was supposed to be south of St. Augustine, but there was no shoreline around St. Augustine that looked even close to the shoreline described on the map. And when I just landed and walked south of St. Augustine I never saw even a single landmark. I tried everything, looked everywhere around St. Augustine, then just concluded that Raymondo lied to me (and that, of course, ended my ability in that game to find any more lost relatives.)

Yeah, I think you're insane. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Because I defeated Monty around the area of Curacao and his hideout was near Veracruz. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dp_nogd.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ng" border="0" alt="dp_nogd.gif" /> Must just be your good luck.

That's easily explained: There's a inland lake in Florida peninsula. You have to walk there to see your landmark.

I feel like a fool. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> I never noticed that before. For some reason I just thought the small pointer took over in certain directions and the rest of the time the big pointer worked. Thanks wolfy... LOL master navigator indeed...

Well, I actually once followed the red arrow by mistake, thinking that I was heading south when I was actually heading generally towards east... Imagine my embarrassment when I realised what I had done and how foolishly I had wasted a week of my pirate's life, basically chasing the wind... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate_plain.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p3" border="0" alt="pirate_plain.gif" />

Well, I am sleeping well at night, by repeating to myself how many map locations I found just by `on-land` dead reckoning.. Pfft, who needs a stinking compass anyway... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" />
