Guide The tips thread

Uhm... no. I spent about 30 minutes playing AoP in total. I'm just familiar with PotC, really. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

How about we don't spam this thread and keep it clean for tips and strategies <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

<!--quoteo(post=330746:date=Jun 19 2009, 12:46 PM:name=Sordid)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Sordid @ Jun 19 2009, 12:46 PM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=330746"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Well gosh, of course there is. It's bloody annoying too, I <i>swear</i> the game always moves the wind against you on purpose! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />
And COAS also remembers the ship positions.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I thought it was just me! I wan't going to complain about it, I thought I was just going crazy, but I have experienced this.

If I need to go North, wind is blowing South.
If I need to go South, wind is blowing North.
If I need to go East, wind is blowing West.
If I need to go West, wind is blowing East.

How does the game know where I want to go? Maybe it isn't the game and we both just have Demons in out computers. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

another way of increasing your reputation is to go brawl in the tavern.join an npc for a drink and when the option that says "i'll cut your throat appears, choose it then you will be in a one on one fight with that npc after which you can loot him and earn some reputation.everybody hates trouble makers i guess lol

For World map Sailing
(I don't know if it's mentioned anywhere in the forum, anyhow I couldn't find it at least, so I prefer to share it.)
When sailing on world map if an enemy squadron approaches, the upper right icon changes from "Entering sea" mod to "Grappling" mod and short after than that "Report from the sailor on watch" comes which gives you only one choice, "Engage", "Sail on" button is not activated.
But if you press space bar before the "Report from the sailor on watch" comes, then on the report now you will have "Sail on" button is activated and you keep on sailing till another report comes. Before than that report, if you again press space bar, you will again have two choices "Engage" or "Sail on".
Keep repeating this till you reach the most advantageous spot to engage. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

I'm sure most of you already found this out, but if your fighting in a tight area and are stuck behind your fighters and want to get some swings in. Sheath your weapon, then you can run through, re-draw and join the fight.

Good one!
thanks

When you recruiting officer you can lower his price for couple of thousand. All you have to do is tell him that you think his price is little too much. When he lowers the price, DON'T accept but leave the dialog and then talk again. Now his base price is the lowered one and you can repeat the procedure again until he won't lower price any more.
I lowered from 14k to about 8k.
I don't know which stat affects this.

(I posted this under the topic "Unable to recruit officers." but it is also related to "The tips thread" so I think it'll be useful to repeat it here.)

There is a way to hire more officers than your allowed limit.
When you reached your limit and found one or two officers that you want to add to your team, just buy cheap vessels and leave them to the Port Control.
Then go and hire the new officers that you want.
After hiring them, take back your vessels from the Port Control and sell them back.
But I'm not sure whether some of the officers will resign in the subsequent game days to bring back you to your allowed limit or not.

EDIT: I hired two ex.officers above my allowed limit...approx. three game months passed over it...they are still with me, although one of my officers has no loyalty at all, none of them resigned.
Game doesn't force me down to my allowed limit.

If you are about to enter the <b>City of Abandoned Ships</b>, be sure your char is ready because you can not leave again until you complete the quest line.
And you can not train your char more inside if your are too weak.
Make sure you have:
<ol type='1'><li>Decent health and energy for long fights.</li><li>Taken all the defensive and fighting personal perks.</li></ol>This especially applies if you are not playing on the lowest difficulty setting; unfortunately the game will let you enter COAS without any warnings long before your are ready to survive some extremely unfair combat situations.
There is no other way out and the only chance to save your game is to restart from a savepoint right before you entered COAS and train your char up more.
One may very well loose days of gameplay here because you will have to do a lot other stuff before you run into some of those nearly impossible combat situations.

Of course this does not apply if you started your game with cheats enabled. (godmode to the rescue).

(during world map sailing)

i noticed that pirate ships avoid other nations ship and only chase your ship.somehow this can be used to lured them further away from your ship just position your ship behind another ship of other nationalities to gain some space between you and your pirate pursuers

Heres a tip thats good in most games but really important in this one. Save, save, save, save, then backup save a few times. The quests are way to easy to break in this game, its much easier to have a backup save that you can go back to and not lose alot of time. To you poor buggers playing on hardcore.... ouch.

Sailing in 3D mode

may help to avoid loosing time: I once was almost out of food near St Catalina and had to go to Port Royal, so I tried to catch a "good" wind vs N or E and was saiiling NE raising time x 8, left the computer alone for ~ 30 minutes, drinking coffee whatever....

But be careful sailing along the shore line at western, southern main: going back to map mode made my ship twice moving in the deep jungle using my own personal Panama canal. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Take the personal skills Tree of life and Dyanmo early in the game, as it only counts levels you gain after taking them to add points to your health and energy.

Hi again!
I've got a big problem!

I don't know why,but at some point my cannons refuse to fire/load and it so happens that I don't have a save, near the mission I'm currently on.

Can something be done to unstuck the cannons?

So far besides being a FedEx for the shop owners the other sure way to raise the loyalty of the good officers is to leave the surrendered enemies with their ship at large. Funny it works with the pirates too. If you capture them the loyalty drops as it drops if you deal with smuglers. I am starting to think it is better to hire bad officers. Seems it is like in the real life - the bad guys get all the blondes <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Edit: It appears the Bluebird ship is perfect for adjusting the loyalty of the officers. Especially with the speed upgrade she catches all the small ships (4,5,6,7) and even the corvettes and they (almost) all surrender. Then capture/enslave/turn over to the governor for bad loyalty and release/release from the captivity for free for good loyalty.

My guess would be you ran out of powder. The battle interface is screwy that way, it shows you how many cannonballs you have left but not how much gunpowder.

Starnge, but it actually decreased my reputation

be careful when accepting timed quests from your GG. The game doesn't recognize you might need more time if he moves, for instance my France GG moved to caracas, yet it still only gives me 4 days to get to port-a-prince to defend it. No chance at all of making it. Just have to wait until they move to a port closer before taking the quest.

heres one

you dont need to actually sail to a port to enter it from the worldmap if you exit to sea near the shore somewhat close to it. Just go to sea and choose "Sail to" and choose the port/beach. Extremely useful when sailing from the south to Port a Prince, instead of sailing alllllll the way around to the inlet that it is in, park your ship due south of it on the other side of the island and "sail to" the port. (youll know what i mean when you check it) Saves a few days sailing easily.

This tactic can also be useful if there is a enemy squadron in between you and the port, just get somewhat near land, exit to sea, and hop to it using "sail to" ... if the option to go to port isnt there, but a beach/cove is, try sailing there first, from there, you may be able to "sail to" the port.
