The best Base of Operations EVER!

Okay...I'm playing in the 1640s and I've found the best Base of Ops. I took Florida Keys away from the Spanish and I've made it my Base. It is really, really good. Havana, which is directly below it is extremely rich and extremely well defended. Havana sends out at least 6 ships a day and gives you plenty of ships to plunder. When your crew's morale is down, just go to Havana and sack it.

Then...it gets better. Near Havana is an early Spanish Settlement. From there, you can send governors and new research ideas to Havana and Florida Keys, boosting both economies.

When you're tired of constant Spanish harassment, then go to the monastary next to the Spanish settlement. It'll send a guy to talk to the Spanish. Then when you're tired of peace, go and get 'em and repeat the process.

Plus...the Treasure Fleet HAS to come through here, so you can get rich quick. Plus all top 10 pirates (at least in my game) are all near here so you can easily become the #3 or #2 pirate in the Carribbean!

Aye mate,sounds like a sound plan,I'd be give'n it a go <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Hmm, that does sound like a good plan.

Myself, I prefer Hispaniola (the one with `Port-de`-Paix and Tortuga), it's a quick sail to the Main, Mexico, and Cuba. Kinda centered. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

I always had fun in the South. What was it ... Curacao?

Dispatch from there and hit every Spanish town until you're forced to go North. Instead drive back and hit them and every ship until you are back home ... I loved doing that.

I like all your suggestions, but I've always favored the Leeward Islands; St. Kitts, St. Martin, Nevis, and Antigua, et al, being close enough to San Juan to grab bigger ships, and then recruit a large crew that I can take South to Trinidad and work my way West along the Main. It's rare that I cannot take most of the Main away from the Spanish and set up a healthy warchest to attempt to take what I consider the ultimate objective, Panama!
<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p2" border="0" alt="pirate3.gif" />

The problem I have with taking the entire main away from the Spanish is sooner or later, there are no more Spanish ships to take. I have noticed that if I leave Porto Bello, Cartagena, Maricaibo and Trinidad Spanish, I can change everything else to other nationalities (I do some of each of the other three in the event of a peace epidemic) and the shipping doesn't drop too much. I have plenty of easy targets for the quick cash, I still raid the remaining Spanish cities as much as I want, only don't change their govenors,
With the Yucatan, I absolutely hate that sail back, especially since I'm a Frigate driver, and have found a way to cut down on the amount of times I need to make it. I take all the cities there and make them friendly. That way, when when any of the villains appear, they do so closer to the center of the map, and never go to the Yucaten. They have, so far, never gone to a `non-Spanish` city. Plus, the sail to the Yucatan has always yielded at least two, as many as 5 named pirates.
BTW, saw a couple of good shows on underwater archeology this morning on the recovery of Blackbeard's "Queen Anne's Revenge," and Kidd's "Adventure Galley" on the Discovery Channel. If you get the chance, check them out.

As soon as I take Panama, I'm retiring, so... I don't really need to worry about the lack of Spanish shipping. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

In the meantime, I plan to gather crews from the (friendly) Main in order to take Cartagena, which will probably be hell. Then it's up to Puerto Principe, St. Augestine, down Mexico, to Gran Granada (finding my grandfather and a lost city on the way), then I take a short detour to Santa Catalina to pick up sailors, then down Central America picking up crew from havens, then to Panama!

As you can see, I have this rampage all planned out. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I've taken a few Spanish towns all over the Caribbean, so I have several bases of operations, someplace nearby that I can scoot off to when I've got too many "duckies" (prize ships) following me. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> Just keep sailing around and around, and the Spanish keep sending pirate hunters after me, LOL! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

I'm also working on an interesting experiment, to see how long I can sail around with an UNhappy crew and yet still keep them from mutiny. It's been a LONNNNNG time now, and I have over 200,000 gold... My crew has flashes of extreme happiness (like when I was down to only 33 crew and took Montalban's ship, hee hee!)... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

General Hankerchief, could u tell me what that amount of money is? PLEASE! I really would like to keep my crew longer. Why? Well its simple. Heres my plan for the game.

`18-50` years old: Be one helluva pirate (sack, pillage sink, get money)
`60-70` years old: sack every single city in the Caribbean and change it to English
`70-80` years old: Marry every single governor's daughter in the Caribbean
90- eternity: Stop pirating and become a trader.

Now you see, the problem with the last step when I'm 90, is that trading is gonna rlly make my crew angry cuz I'm not getting a whole lot of treasure!

So how much money do you need to have to keep 'em from mutinying? Its probably a bug right? Damn! They'll fix it in the next patch <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

You need about 1,000,000. Then the crew will never be unhappy. I was testing that with a trainer <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

The "hump" tew git o'er, as Fred Bob be seein' it, be after defeatin' Montalban an' gittin' de 100,000 gold! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> After dat, Fred Bob didn't be dividin' no plunder agin until he be retirin', in his last game! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate_plain.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p3" border="0" alt="pirate_plain.gif" /> Noticed dat it were purty easy tew keep dem happy after me gold got above 2 or 300,000 or so! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Here are some interesting numbers in a interesting thread by bigchief.

You can only marry one daughter.

I do not think its a bug, why would you think it is?

The way things have been going with me, I'm up about $300,000 now and sailing about with an average of about `75-90` crew... They've been alternately happy, unhappy, and inbetween, so it is NOT the level of money, as some people surmise. No mutiny threatened yet...

I'm sure it's the way Bigchief has plotted it out - there is a percentage per man to keep them happy, and it's also more of a percentage, the higher the difficulty rating. That would be fairly simple to script, I think.

I'm listed now as the #1 pirate, and figure I could aim now for capturing as many ships as I can (inbetween Montalban and Raymondo)... I've wooed and saved several gov's daughters but have not gone back to marry any of them. I think you can do THIS for each gov - but naturally, you need to be sure to keep track of who you've done this for so you can be sure not to go back in there and risk having to either turn them down, or marry them...

I think my age is about `40-45` at the moment, and I'm in fair health. Oh, and I'm playing at rogue, in case anyone's wondering. I started there, and I'll drop back down a notch when the duels get too difficult for my health... That's my plan... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

I also think the crew morale is affected by how long your current voyage is. Some other members here have tested this I believe but I forget what their results were. When my voyage goes longer that 24 months I find the crew gets unhappy a lot quicker.
