Squire of the Sea

Pierre, the African guy, is the one you sussed out correctly in yellow clothes. He does have long hair.

The redhaired girl's design in my artwork was inspired more by Japanese games at the time, like Uncharted Waters Online has extremely youthful female player characters and clothes to match. However, Lizzie is very much a chronological and physical adult, just on the short side much to her annoyance.

As for Simon (waistcoat-wearing pirate) and Edgar (t-shirt with jacket and bandana), those character models look close enough. Whether a goldfish/koi tattoo could be put on Edgar's right arm is another matter.

The 3D model with some colour changes could pass for Lucretia.

I probably can't do Pierre, then. At least, not unless he gets a completely different set of clothes, in which case either one of the governor models or the model of Hector Barbossa from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films could be retextured.

Lizzie can't be made smaller because if a character model is modified to change size, it will probably break the animation. You really don't want to see what Lizzie would look like if that happened!

Edgar's tattoo could certainly be added, though it might appear on both arms because the texture file only has one arm texture which is used for both. If you can upload a really good picture of the tattoo, squarely on rather than at an angle, I should be able to copy it into Edgar's texture file.

Meanwhile, Purpure has found Lucinda's house; and Purpure's pirate texture, with a different mouth, applied to hatless "Danielle", easily produced the impostor:

Monsieur Pierre does fancy himself as fancy as a Dumas protagonist, although I didn't design fancier clothes for him just yet in pixel art form.

Purpure will need to give her former mentor's house a good cleaning and a set of lights. As for Edgar's tattoo:

I didn't make a very high resolution version to start with, but this should work.

The walls of Lucinda's house look dark because it's 9pm. Besides, it's a basic stone house in old times - Lucinda wouldn't have been able to keep the outside clean and Purpure won't have time to even try! Inside is clean and tidy. But if Lucinda is supposed to be in a fancier house instead of a common small stone house, there's a mansion in the other town on Barbados - the town in which Purpure starts the game due to being British - which could be turned into Lucinda's house instead.

That tattoo picture is fine. The entire texture for the sailor model is 512x512 so the tattoo will need to be shrunk to fit on the arm.

Lucinda's house was a cottage with a lighthouse attached in the RPGMaker version.
OK, change of plan. Mrs. Mason's house will not become Lucinda Longstride's house. There is a lighthouse location on Barbados, with an attached cottage. You can either walk there from the same town as Mrs. Mason's house, though you need to pass through a canyon inhabited by lots of bandits; or you can sail there. The lighthouse is on top of a cliff with a path leading down to the beach and another path leading back to the canyon.

Good to know that the tattoo works.
I haven't actually tried it yet but in theory it should just be a matter of putting the tattoo onto the part of the texture file which covers the arm. Edgar is probably going to have hairy arms and legs, but I should be able to remove the beard and moustache from the texture.

What I'd like to do is make one officer who will join Purpure when she gets the Lotus. The idea is that she'll join the pirates by talking to a boss pirate on Nevis - he's already there in the game and talking to him is the normal way to join the pirates. When Purpure leaves his house, the officer should appear and tell her that she now has a new ship. Lizzie, if I understand correctly, has been Purpure's friend since childhood and can probably be assigned as a free officer at the start of the game. But this is FreePlay and the player can do anything. (Players can do all sorts of silly things, even in fixed storylines, and one of the challenges of writing a storyline is to either prevent them from doing something which breaks the story, or writing the story to allow for the player doing something unexpected.) So if Lizzie is an officer at the start of the game, we can't count on her being there when Purpure gets the Lotus - she might have been killed in a battle or the player might have fired her.

Almost everyone except Lizzie and Sonia is fair game for joining upon getting the Lotus ship.

Yes, Lizzie has been Purpure's childhood pal. I'm aware free play stories might have some ridiculous outcomes so not everything can be so tightly written.

Seen from a short distance, you can see the entrance to the lighthouse tower. The light is even visible at night, though the one in the inside location does not light up:

There's also that wooden shack at the side. A similar location on another island uses that, but the one on Barbados has no entrance there.

@Purpure Longstride: Some progress on Edgar's model:
Edgar_head.jpg

A shadow line needs to be added around the collar. Other shadows on the legs (not shown here, of course, as this is only the head model) need some work before the full model is ready. The tattoo does appear on both arms as expected because there's only one piece of texture for the arm, used directly on the right arm and mirrored onto the left arm. Edgar isn't the only character with a double tattoo - the main character in one of the storylines has an anchor tattoo on his arm which appears on both arms for the same reason.

At a guess, if Purpure is adopted by Lucinda Longstride, she takes Lucinda's surname, which would explain your name on the forum! Does she use the surname in your story?

Should other characters also have surnames? Margaret already has one, Jocasta. How about Edgar, Lizzie and Wilda?

I don't usually include surnames unless it's a full profile, but yes, Purpure eventually came to terms with the fact that Lucinda was one of the few people that cared for her as a parent would.

Margaret Jocasta is really Margaret Jocasta Davies, but she just likes how Jocasta rolls off the tongue more.

Edgar Dubois, as well as Elsie Dubois. Lizzie Whitebrush. Wilda Wright.

Thanks, I'll add the surnames to the character definitions. The full name will be shown over a small picture of the character when you face her, and also on the screen where you can look at your officers. In dialogs, though, sometimes a full name will be used, such as during a first introduction. First names can be used later when a character remembers you.

Margaret would probably introduce herself as "Margaret Jocasta", so I'll use "Jocasta" for her surname. Middle names can be added but if she has "Jocasta" as middle name and "Davies" as surname, the middle name will very rarely be used - most of the time she'll either be "Margaret" or "Margaret Davies".

Meanwhile, here's Edgar:
Edgar.jpg

Perhaps he's not quite as you imagined him. For one thing, the large eyes in your original pictures can't work. Character models all have eye sockets with separate eyeballs, so if I try to make the eye larger, it will just look as though he has the usual eye with a fake eye painted round it. This model was the best I could find to give him short trousers, a short waistcoat, and - most important for that tattoo - short sleeves.

What is Edgar's job aboard the ship?

As for how Purpure meets him and gets the Lotus, I've a couple of ideas. The easy one is simply to check for when Purpure goes into the pirate boss house, then check whether she has joined the pirate brotherhood - if so, Edgar appears and tells her that the Lotus needs a new captain and she's being offered the job. The more complex route, which provides a way to introduce Lucretia, is to check for Purpure mooring at any of the three places on Nevis - the pirate settlement on one side of the island, a British colony on the other side, or a beach near the south end. Lucretia can then arrest Purpure for the plantation raid. Edgar can break her out of prison, they flee to the pirate settlement, then they escape on the Lotus. Or perhaps you have a better idea?

I expected that the characters would look different in Sea Dogs' art style as mine is very cartoony compared to the semi-realism of European and Western RPGs.

Edgar is also a gunner aboard the Lotus ship.

Since Lucretia in Sea Dogs has a bone to pick with Purpure and doesn't care if she caught the right arsonist, your version of events could work for the game.

In the RPGMaker version, Edgar was one of the fellow youngsters of the pirate island and joined the Lotus Crew in hopes of helping provide for his ill cousin Elsie.

OK, we'll go with Lucretia arresting Purpure when she arrives at Nevis, and also require a level increase so that before this can happen, the player has to have done something - we don't care what as this is FreePlay, but the action isn't going to start if the player sails straight from the starting point to Nevis. If the player has chosen to become a pirate, Lucretia won't need an excuse! Otherwise the arrest dialog can include a bit about burning a plantation.

What sort of ship does Lucretia have, and what is its name?

Not the big steam frigate I'd used, then!

Perhaps Lucretia should have something a bit bigger than Lotus, otherwise when she tries to arrest Purpure for a crime she did not commit, why does Purpure not try to resist? Perhaps a naval schooner - still not a big warship but bigger than the little brig, and a nice ship for chasing pirates as it is fast and agile.

@Purpure Longstride: next questions - who joins Purpure first, Edgar or Simon? And does Simon have a surname?

Simon's model turned out to be a lot easier to texture than Edgar's because the original game model is very close already. He just needed the jacket and trousers changed to be redder to match your pictures, the eyes changed to blue, and the mouth changed a bit so that he looks more different. I also made the hair a bit lighter.

(Edit: replaced picture of Simon in development with picture of Simon in the game.)

How about this, then? After a few level increases, when Purpure visits Nevis, Lucretia arrests her. She's transferred to the prison in the British colony, Charlestown. One of the Lotus officers breaks Purpure out of prison, they cross Nevis to the pirate settlement, where Purpure gets the Lotus.

If that meets with your approval, which one would you prefer to help with the escape - Simon or Edgar? Whichever one doesn't help can join as an officer when Purpure gets the Lotus.
