Spanish 74 guns SHIPYARD CUTAWAYS

Bill Bones

Landlubber
This are a set of cutaway drawings of an unidentified Spanish ship of the line; a 74-guns ship from the "Ildefonsinos" series (built upon the model of the terribly successful San Ildefonso); probably this ship is the Montañés, built in 1794.

This cutaways are shipyard cutaways, a part of the original papers of the ship, and probably where drawn upon the construction in order to be used for teaching. Currently they're preserved at the Museo Naval in Madrid

GREAT STUFF! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Excellent pictures, matey! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Thar be any text captions to go with each picture? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Well, the images are scanned from a book and the originals in high-res allow to see the numbers on the cutaways and read reasonably well the captions for each number -in 18th century Spanish naval jargon. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

I posted reduced images as I thought I could post them on the post itself with IMG tags. The original scannings are about 3600 x 2500 in size... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

Anyway I'll try to add some captions for each cutaway posted here at least... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

-Done!

Hm. I thought that only English ships were painted in such particular way... Oh well <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

But those are gorgeous pics, I'll say <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Thankee fer translatin' de captions, Bones! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Dat troublesome word ye mentioned might be "waist" with regard to a ship in English! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I prefere the Santisima Trinidad. It was the biggest lineship of the world. It was build in 1769 and it had 140 guns <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />
