Ahoy, everyone! We are happy to share that our friends from BlackMark Studio have received permission from the copyright holder to open the source code of the Storm Engine.
Sea Dogs: To Each His Own - Pirate Open World RPG - Source Code revealed! - Steam News

This opens new possibilities for the entire fan community to work together on making the engine behind our beloved games great again.

A team of programmers has already started to work actively on improving the engine (x64 and DirectX 9 support are done, Linux port and major graphics improvements are planned).
Currently, the only game compatible with the new engine is Sea Dogs: To Each His Own. Compatibility with Sea Dogs: City of Abandoned Ships is in progress.
PA! community also participates in the development of the engine and works on upgrading Pirates of the Caribbean: New Horizons to use the latest version of the engine.

The source code is available here: storm-devs/storm-engine

Join us in this new exciting adventure!

Noice, does that mean that it's possible to get rid of all the bugs and crashes and that we won't need special software to make it run properly on Windows 10 anymore? :D

Storm Engine 2.8 and 2.9 run normally without extra software right?
At least it does for me, even when using Intel graphics.

Storm Engine 2 is a different case.
If PotC will be ported on the newest version of the engine it will indeed not need any extra software far as I can tell.
@Hammie is working on it right now.

And engine limitations should indeed be possible to fix now. :yes

Yes.
Eventually.
If and when @Hammie and whoever else helps him meets with success, that is.
It can surely be done. And it surely won't be smooth sailing to get there.

Do you think they might give us a complete set of animation files ? That would be really helpful.

Impression I get from @mitrokosta (BlackMark Studios) is that they don't have anything new in that direction.

So unless @Eddy or any of the other earlier developers still has something lying around...?
