Well, try this - a good place to start - <a href="http://www.nmm.ac.uk/collections/" target="_blank">UK National Maritime Museum.</a> Look in paintings to give you some ideas <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> or just play with it on your own - that's what I did with my Celtic Xebec CT. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

In terms of 'realistic' skins--I think in general pirates were too busy doing other things to give their ships much of a paintjob.
What's also greatly helpful is the variety of ship-model galleries on the web.
