Fixed Remove Rapists

Another thought: in "PROGRAM\Rumour_Data.c", one of the rumours is "Oh, lord! Will our governor not do something about those gutless savages in the jungle whose only pastime is chasing down poor girls and having their way with them, and robbing travelers blind?! If I were younger I might do something myself... You learn a lot about swordfighting, beating up the refuse of humanity..." The bit about "chasing down poor girls" is going to have to change if the rapists scene is being changed, and for preference should be noticably different from the one about "robbing travelers blind", as that presumably refers to the highwaymen already in the game.
 
How about a simple rewording such as, "Oh, lord! Will our governor not do something about those gutless savages in the jungle whose only pastime is accosting unsuspecting travellers and robbing them blind?! If I were younger I might do something myself. You learn a lot about sword fighting, beating up the refuse of humanity..."?

I doubt even long-time players will even notice the difference. :D

err I havent actually read it in a while since ppl tend to say the same rumor a million times so I mostly skip thru, but iirc they talk about some society in the jungle led by warrior women to which your char responds something like "Like Amazones, eh? Interesting...". Ill doublecheck later. anyway, I assumed it was just tall tales, but some islands Ive hardly explored at all, so if they exist I will start my quest anew :sail

Nope, that one isn't real.
Unless @Grey Roger decides they live on the other side of Martinique. ;)

Amazons? No. Poisonous undead monkeys? Maybe... ;):monkeydance
 
I think @Mad Jack Wolfe's suggestion sounds nice and natural :yes sidenote: are all the rumors true? I havent found the amazons :eek:
I can't find any mention of "warrior women" or "Amazons" in either "PROGRAM\Rumour_Data.c" or "RESOURCE\INI\TEXTS\ENGLISH\rumour_strings.txt", so I don't know where that rumour can be.

As for an alternative scenario, the snag with robbery is that we already have one - the highwaymen. Could we have a more distinctive scene? For example, perhaps the villains are kidnappers and the person asking for help is about to be kidnapped, or has just escaped.

Meantime, I added the toggle to disable the rape scene and put the variable into "InternalSettings.h". I haven't had time to check whether it works, bearing in mind that rape encounters are rare even when enabled, but at least I could see no sign of error messages so it shouldn't mess up the game. It should be easy to remove again when the replacement scenario is ready.

its spelled "amazones" which threw me in for a bit of a loop. not quite a amazon society, but I didnt know the natives in the game had that social structure :p Ill continue my search none the less, a girls gotta dream

anyway, while I think robberies are generic and ubiqitous enough to not get repetitive, I see what youre saying. Im up for some more brainstorming; like kidnappers or maybe a person who has had a change of heart and is defecting from the criminals gang?

Ah, I think that is because some ancient modder decided the "mummies" in the game look female rather than male. :wp

The misspelling threw me a bit as well. Perhaps amazones are areas where they keep the Amazons? :rolleyes:xD

I have to be careful when I open these files. It's too easy to slip down the rabbit hole of correcting spelling and grammar mistakes or changing bits of clunky dialogue. #writersproblems :checklist

As another alternative, I've had some thoughts about improving the original scenario. If anyone is interested, I'll give more details. The idea would be to improve the dialogue, make the woman a stronger character, and remove the option to decline to help so that the actual rape never happens. But you still get to enjoy killing would-be rapists, even if you're only level 1.

The idea is that the rapists know she's poorly armed and are toying with her before having their evil way. The practical effect is that she keeps one of them busy so you're only fighting two at once, not three, which is much more survivable. And that means we get to disable the option to decline to help, which means the actual rape never happens.

Better dialog for the woman, no sexual violence, and you still get to enjoy killing would-be rapists.

thats def much better, and had it been like that from the beginning I probably wouldnt have thrown a hissy fit :p but; even tho I love murdering rapists, I still think overt rape, even if averted, doesnt really fit into the general tone of the rest of the mod. thats more of an abstract artistic opinion contrary to finding it incredibly offensive and tasteless like the old one, so Im not gonna flip out bout it if ppl dont agree. but if its changed anyway I think itd fit better to change the nature of it to sumthing else. but again, thats more personal taste and not about human decency towards women :p:onya
 
I had a go at this. The main snag is that the woman is between you and the attackers, so when the fight starts, they all go for her. I've had some success with forcing two of them to attack the player character but it's not perfect.

thats sounds fine, the part where you can just leave them to it with a polite apology was absolutely the worst part :onya but the dialog is still bad and could use some work tho, specially the womans cuz no one speaks like that, not even in fiction, and no one feels like they wanna share a bed with anyone right after being chased by a gang of ruffians hellbent on raping you except in porn. its just tasteless

Im about halfway thru rewriting it to a reformed criminal defecting if you wanna check it out before making a final decision tho :flower the dialog shd be rewritten sumwhat either way, but your solution sounds alright if preferring to keep it closer to the original, even if I dislike it, and I could rewrite the dialog either way if thats okey

EDIT: is there nothing in the file that leads to the "CheckSkills" node? the .c file is probably just copied from the raiders file and it got left in
