question about letter of marque

Hi, so I just got the letter of marque, and I thought that having this would enable me to attack ships of nations my nation is at war with without a hit in reputation. Yet everytime I do so, I go down from trusted sailor to regular sailor.

I'm running the GOF mod if that makes a difference. Many thanks in advance!

Haven`t played the game in ages-lack of proper pc at the moment-but as far as I remember you must fly the flag of your nation in order not to get a rep hit.
You can try to fly the jolly roger as well when on the world map but expect all nations to attack you. Anyway entering 3rd person view will immediately start the battle without reputation hit when flying appropriate colours I think.
