Trying to steam up their glasses, Lady Cat? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

I'm finding that any merchant ships I go after routinely surrender to my ship the minute I board them. (With the exception of the escort ship with soldiers on them. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" /> )
I was wondering if the crews of merchant ships could be made up of the towns people, where some of them are walking around armed, but most of them are not. What I'm envisioning is a set up on a ship similar to when you get into a fight in town when you, or one of your officers "inadvertently" hit one of the good guys, and people either attack you or start running for high ground.
Let's say you attack a merchant ship and board her, the action switches to the boarding screen, but rather than soldiers you have a bunch of civillians, with some of them drawing weapons, but a lot of them running around and cowering. Once you defeat all of the armed people you would get the option to hit F3 and either advance to a lower deck, or they surrender, or you could practice real piracy by bumping off the remaining unarmed people. (And subsequently taking all the appropriate hits to your reputation. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" /> )
I realize this is kind of a gruesome thought, but it strikes me that most of the reputation hits occuring in the game come to you almost by accident rather than making a conscious choice and this would let you actually earn that "Bloody Terror", or "Horror of the High Seas".
I know this would be even more complicated, but if you could run up a black flag or jolly roger while in the sea mode and the merchant ship opposite you had the option of running up a white flag in response, (then when you board it goes to the surrender screen,) however, if they do not surrender, you could then run up the Red or "No Quarter" flag and in pirate logic, anybody on the ship is fair game. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" />
