Well, hard question.
I think the more realistic of life on board is Master and Comander.
The more realistic of pirates' life ... I don't know. A misc of some movies...<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Definitely I would agree that Master and Commander has to be the most realistic depiction of life aboard an early 18th century warship, and it would be pretty cool if they make another movie on the career of Jack Aubrey. It is tough to think of what would be a realistic depiction of a pirate's life as pretty much all the pirate movies I can think of were done tongue in cheek.
Maybe a realistic pirate movie can be found in this list.

Peter Weir says he wants to make another Master and Commander, Russel Crowe also says that he wouldn't mind being Jack Aubrey again, but the next one was "about ten years down the road" back in 2003. There are rumors about "The Hundred Days" or "The Commodore" being the base story for the next one.
When it comes to "The Das Boot of pirate movies", I say the Hornblower miniseries. Master and Commander is an excellent example of how the period looked: the ships, uniforms, people, tactics, etc. are all perfectly amazing, but Hornblower shows you the everyday lifes of the officers and men aboard those ships, the food they ate, the hardships, ups and downs of the voyages at sea. I also like the language of Hornblower, very much like it was then.

I agree with Commodore Jones in that the Hornblower miniseries was outstanding at showing the day to day life of the sailors at this time.

Salty, the miniseries is on DVD. You should spend some of the loot you have been hiding <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/treas1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":treas" border="0" alt="treas1.gif" /> and purchase the set. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" />

Well, Mr Weir has plenty of material for more "Masters and Commanders". If I remember right, the book series has 24 volumes. And the current movie only uses about 3 of them.

Color me dumb! I hadn't heard of the Hornblower miniseries, just the books. It sounds like a great production. I will have to check it out.

<b>Edit:</b> And, color me dumber; I forgot, I was going to mention another movie. It is not a pirate movie; so please don't add it to the list. However, it is an interesting sailing story-

<i>The Whackiest ship in the Army</i> starring Jack Lemmon and Ricky Nelson (what a cutie!).

Aye, the series starred Ioan Gruffudd as Hornblower and Robert Lindsay as Sir Edward Pellew. The series starts with mr. Midshipman Hornblower with mean ol' Simpson and goes to Hornblower and the Hotspur with fellow Commander Bracegirlde and Lt. Bush.

Daphne and the Pirate

1916-USA-Costume Adventure/Sea Adventure

PLOT DESCRIPTION
Daphne La Tour (Gish), is the daughter of a destitute French nobleman in the early 18th century. Because he is the favorite at the king's court, Philip de Mornay (Elliot Dexter) can probably have any woman he wants, but he likes Daphne's audacity. So he orders his men to kidnap her and take her to the home of Franchette, a popular madam (Lucile Young). But before he can fetch her, he is forced to flee and is captured by pirates. Meanwhile, Franchette's place is overtaken by soldiers who are rounding up women to send to Louisiana, where wives are sorely needed. Daphne is among the young ladies captured, but the ship they are on is attacked by the pirates. Daphne helps save the day for the Frenchmen, and as a result, she saves Philip's life. Although she has been sold to Jamie D'Arcy (Walter Long), she nevertheless manages to marry Philip when they reach Louisiana.

In 1588, relations between Spain and England are at the breaking point. British sea raiders regularly capture Spanish merchantmen bringing gold from the New World with the support of Queen Elizabeth I. After a plot to depose her is discovered, she enlists Michael Ingolby, whose father was killed by the Inquisition, to go undercover and infiltrate the court of Philip of Spain. Masquerading as one of the traitors, Ingolby finds the names of British subjects in Spanish pay. He identifies the would-be assassins and discovers their plans to send the Armada against England. His feats earn Ingolby the love of a Spanish noblewoman, an English courtesan, and Queen Elizabeth herself as he takes the British fleet into battle. At the climax he leads a night attack on the Armada ships massed off the coast of England.

I have to check this one!!<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I love Gary Cooper. He grew up on a ranch about 30 miles north of where I live in Montana. He is one of the state's "favorite sons".

Here is one I didn't notice on the list. It is perhaps another that stretches the bounds, but I think the idea of pirates is there: <u>Waterworld</u> with Kevin Costner and Dennis Hopper. Hopper played the leader of a group called "Smokers" that behaved a lot like pirates. Though the movie was futuristic science fiction, I think it captured the concept of pirates, just in a bit different reality.
Then again, I could be wrong. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

EDIT: I just looked back at the list again, to make sure I didn't somehow miss "Waterworld" <snipped by Fred Bob>

Great list,I try to watch seafaring type movies when theyre on,but usually they only get shown once since most of them are old and the category isn't exactly one of the most popular as far as movies.Nate and Hayes has to be my all time favourite "serious" pirate movie,Ice Pirates is my favourite "spoof/comedy" pirate movie.I caught most of an old black and white one the other night called "Fortunes Of Captain Blood"()that wasn't too bad.Infact for a b&w and being the era it was made in it was surprisingly violent and graphic, granted by todays standards it's comparable to probably less than PG-13 but none the less it was good and from what I saw lacked the over the top drama and theatrics some of the other old pirate/seafaring movies of that period had.Granted it wasn't exactly oscar caliber and the story is easily predictable especially if you've ever seen any of the other movies based on the "Captain Blood" story. If you have the time and can catch it on t.v. give it a try as it's far from the worst pirate movie i've ever seen.

Info:
Fortunes Of Captain Blood(1950)

<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042474/" target="_blank">http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042474/</a> (not much info though <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> )

I also didn't see "The Buccaneer" in your list. It's my favourite semi pirate movie and has the likes of Yul Bryner and Charelton Heston in it.Charelton Heston plays Adrew Jackson and it's one of my personal favourites among his many roles over the years, specially one of his last lines in the movie toward the end when he defends Jean Lafitte,I don't want to ruin it and can't quote it exactly so I won't even try so as to not butcher a great preformance,

Very impressive, fry, that you have seen a lot of those old pirate movies. I haven't, though I'm sure they would be entertaining. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

<snipped by Fred Bob>
Waterworld is a good choice because Dennis Hopper and his gang <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/guns.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2guns" border="0" alt="guns.gif" /> were referred to in the write up for the movie at the time as a bunch of pirates. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />:

How embarrassing. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> Sorry about that, Fred Bob, I didn't realize we got that carried away with it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />

I count 93 pirate flicks now in CapitainDams's list, making it the biggest list I've seen anywhere on the net. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />
