Pirates' movies

This might have been mentioned, but I would like to mention the Hornblower TV series. Like Captain Horatio Hornblower, it revolves around sailing. Also, this isn't quite sailing, but for those who are into the Napoleonic era, the tv series from A&E, NAPOLEON, might be one that some would enjoy. It isn't a complete military based look at the ruler of France, but it still caught my attention.

Question: What is this movie that everyone is talking about, the one named Treasure Planet? (I'm guessing that this would be a Star Wars like take off of Treasure Island.)

It is basically the same "coming of age" story as in Stevenson's original novel, but taking place in kinda alternate universe, where people sail from one star system to the other with solar powered tallships.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!

Jim, the main protagonist, a young felon on the verge of juvenile hall, discovers a map (some sort of round globe) containing a holographic projector showing the wax to the hoard of Captain Flint. It is a place known as "Treasure Planet", or "The Loot Of A Thousand Worlds". As in the novel, he and a friend charter a solar sailer, but, unbeknownst to them, the crew are subverted by members of Flint's old crew, lead by the ship's cook, Silver.

Although the movie bombed at the box office, I think it is rather good and the "alternate universe" touch did only add to the story. Some did not like B.E.N., the marooned robot on Treasure Planet (synchronized by Martin Short) due to his over- the- top behavior, but I also thought that consistent with the sroryline.

I believe that it is a very watchable film, not only for kids but adults as well.

Hmm... might watch it. It could be hard for me though, when I watch movies along this topic, I'm VERY picky about details and accuraces of the time period. I would find it too sci-fi...
Example: I was the one to notice that Lt. Pullings shot a flintlock pistol at a Frenchman in the last boarding scene... with the Top Jaw set forward! (The steel plate the flint strikes to create a spark.) That would be impossible!

Already mentioned.

Here are a few new, though:

- The Island (1980)
- Pirates (X-rated, 2005)
- The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie
- Scalawag (w. Kirk Douglas)

Speaking of pirate movies, You guys all know that Yellowbeard is coming out to DVD soon right?

I know one film not mentioned here - it's italian production: <i>Caraibi</i> from 1999, directed by Lamberto Bava, with Mario Adorf, Anna Falchi and others.

But worth repeating! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Is that a new sig, Cap'n Enigma? Looks nice!

Has anyone seen this movie?

La Fille de d'Artagnan, or the American release title, Revenge of the Musketeers. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

Call it a weakness, but I'm unlikely miss a movie with the charming Miss Sophie Marceau.

I don't want to raise expectations too high here, this is not the greatest movie of all time, but it is fun to watch Sophie running around and swinging a rapier in a very haphazard manner. I also liked Phillipe Noiret as a middle-aged d'Artagnan.

William, I wish I had enjoyed Yellowbeard, it has such an amazing cast, but when I saw it in the theaters I was so disapointed because it missed the mark so badly that I was embarassed for the actors. The funniest thing that I can recall from that movie, aside from, "acute 'earing", was Peter Cook kicking a little street urchin down some stairs. I may remember some other fairly funny things, but on the whole that movie blew it.

Aye, La fille de d'Artagnan, I saw it on tv last week (in France). It's not the best musketeer movie but it's a good film.
