<span style='color:red'><i><b>Virtual Memory Optimization:</b></i></span>

Have HP-Pentium4 1.45Ghz, 80GB harddrive, Win XP SP2, no video card - using optimzed OpenGL.

See: <a href="http://piratehaven.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=646" target="_blank">http://piratehaven.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=646</a>

Set virtual memory (ControlPanel>System>Advanced>Performance) at Min:2, Max:2048 - Restart.

Set Pirates! config.ini file, line "IsSystemSlow" = 1 for built-in-game file *.dll optimization.

Blazing !!! Minimal disk activity speeds game !!!

<span style='color:red'><i><b>EVEN BETTER !!! OVERDRIVE VIRTUAL MEMORY !!! </b></i></span>
XP SP2 wants to self-manage a system cache of virtual memory on the disk (paging file) of about 700 MB to about 1GB if there's room on yer disk.

Go ControlPanel>System>Advanced>Performance, and <i><b>FORCE</b></i> XP to manage a <i>user-set</i> paging file of <span style='color:red'>MIN: 4096MB, MAX: 4096MB</span> (That's 4.1 GB on yer disk!).

Plus the system will thus exploit even more time-saved, as it will not have to compare the difference in the MIN/MAX sizes upon every access to this vast virtual memory slot !!!

Windows might say it won't use that much VM, but force it anyway and reap the reward.

The game is in overdrive mateys!! AVAAAAASSST!!!!

Good points. Always interesting to discuss/debate Windows tweaks.

I'll try force those settings and reprt what happens; seems like the system would manage the config you describe, but my most recent system managed config dealth with about 1.25x my phys. mem. and showed no differencee in min/max although the 20 mB figure might have been established virtually.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->...for configuring VM (Virtual Memory) for todays computers.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
My machine is 3.5 yrs old already (Time hauls).

I think this is in general a safer tweak since it can always be reverted (even in safe mode) and I have never lost or ruined data with it is why I voice my assurance. But, yes, still be careful.

<b>If you don't have a video card</b>, like my machine does not, OpenGL can do alot. I turned EVERY SWITCH to the opposite of the default just as an experiment, and, what I had struggled with the first day or so of extrremely slow combat, dancing, and land moves - completely disappeared and this Pentium4 - 1.45Ghz, 528MB physical memory, 300Khz bus machine took off, and everything runs fast and animated perfectly as designed.

Access OpenGL controls with a right-click on the desktop ... GraphicsOptions ... GraphicsProperties (or some such navigation), go to OpenGL and begin clicking the Attributes and Values toggles to their exact opposite. Then choose the Schemes tab, choose your settings. I FORCED the largest possible fullscreen that my hardware would support and it showed up in the game (1280 by 960 on a 17" LCD monitor); AND you can force the gammas (that your HARDWARE processes) at brightness/contrast/saturation levels above the 1.5 gamma limit iin the Pirates!\config.ini file - AWESOME! Game even more bright, brilliant, and beautiful! -- In the Apllication To Launch line, Browse to C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Pirates!\ Pirates!.exe

Save your settings as a New Scheme, click all "OK's" (Restore Defaults later without restarting if you had changed the any RGB gammas), leave Disc 2 in your CD-ROM drive and right click on the Desktop to find Display Modes > Pirates - in your own accelerated configuration! Click once and heave yer plunder!

Try "Schemes" (on WinXP) with a video card too and see what happens.

Having said the above is because I have no video card <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> . If you have extended video resources, no changes as described above may be working fine. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />

Re: Above discussion about changes to Windows settings - do show restraint - and depending on your motherborad, processor and harddisc speed and general efficiencies: yes, I did get alot of game speed-up, especially for the most (seemingly) highly-rendered dueling sequences.

Also test out recommendation in the ReadMe.html file on Pirates! Disc 2 root folder regarding your hardware config. to optimze speed and efficiency of gameplay. That is, if your resources are rather low, adjust Advanced Lighting=0 (off), Display Shadows=0 (off), Trilinear Filtering=0 (off), Disable Shaders=0 (turn shaders OFF - double-negative moot), Water Detail (1 or 2), WorldDetail (1 or 2), IsSlowMachine=1 (yes).

All of this will render game with less visual detail - if you can sacrifice it from this beautiful, astounding interface - but, trust me, you'll hate slow game play - except for ONE TEMPORARY ADVANTAGE: you could purposely slow down game by forcing more resource use with the opposites of what I have just outlined IN ORDER to get a handle on the tight moves in dueling and dancing, even sailing.

Go with a Virtual Memory adjustment of some sort as a rule if you've got the disc scpace since this is a huge game, but play with other paramaters in the CONFIG.INI found in the Start Menu game folder to optimize game for your prefs/needs. Please post your results if you have the inclination.
