OK, so the preliminary cover art needs some work. Let's try that again, shall we?
The PiratesAhoy! Community proudly presents:

This game is being developed to be the pirate and historical seafaring game to end them all. Realistic yet fun gameplay on land and at sea allowing both extensive free play and exciting scripted storylines should ensure that anyone with any interest in the Age of Sail should be able to live their dream!
Now the above may sound a bit vague. Therefore, we recommend you to have a look here:

This article, posted on the ModDB, details our intents quite clearly. However, nothing is set in stone, so if you have any thoughts to contribute, NOW IS THE TIME!
Help Wanted!

We are making this as an independent game without any financial backing. It is made by fully freelance developers in their spare time and will be available for free once we have something playable.
Therefore, we can use all the help we can get. So if you would like to contribute, please head over to the PiratesAhoy! Community forums! It doesn't matter whether you already have any skills or not.
We welcome everyone!

And don't forget to...

Uhm... Thagarr, how do you make the "PiratesAhoy! Logo" show up normally on the main page??? :facepalm

Which logo do you mean mate? Just the PA skull? I just upload it from the "upload file" link.

It automatically minimizes the picture that you attach to the post as an icon, if you click on the full article, it displays properly.

I noticed that. I don't like it. Can we make it minimize an OTHER picture instead so that this one shows properly?

How's that?

Well count me in for sure! I don't know much about code or modeling, but I can help with music, sound, and textures.

Anytime mate, it is a bit different than the rest of the forum. It will automatically pick up on the first picture in the post as the article icon, you can upload the icon you want with the upload file button and it should always be the last one you upload. That is part of the front page addon.

I'm really excited about you making this and am really glad you are implementing my most wanted feature. (control over your character while on your ship)

Have you considered doing a Kickstarter for this? You could create the tech demo first and then do the Kickstarter and have some pirate goods as reward tears. This would help create the game much faster and still let it be free since giving money to a kickstarter is a donation.

PS. This sounds like it will be the greatest seafaring/pirate game ever and could be one of the greatest rpgs ever.

We could use the money for better sound equipment, or... an orchestra anyone?
That still leaves the problem of distribution and management. We are working on a solely voluntary basis, and would have to use every cent of it without keeping any for ourselves.

Yes, we have considered it, and while we haven't ruled it out entirely, it would also bring with it it's own set of complications that I don't think any of us are willing/able to tackle at the moment. :shrug

That is exactly what we are aiming for mate! I simply can not comprehend why the big game companies have not tried this. They have a rabid, loyal fan base just waiting to shovel money into their bank accounts, yet they refuse to produce anything but fluff and fairytales. Since they refuse to take our money, we will give our game away for free! :onya

As much as I would love to have a full blown orchestra preforming our game music, I think the money would be better spent on coding and modeling, if we were ever to actually do a Kickstarter campaign that is. :wp

With the FTP gone, distribution will be a bit more tricky, but I am sure it won't be to hard to find other places to host the files.

I personally think it would be better to allow for donations and sell merchandise as it will allow everyone to do so freely.

Renting a server could be very useful for distribution as well as sharing files within the dev. team, speeding up progress as it were.

I'm sure we can set up some sort of server again. We still do have a PotC Build Mod files server, for example.
If you want, I'll ask Keith about it. Personally, I'm also very unhappy we lost the FTP; that was always mighty handy!

On the money subject, I just can't see how we can convert money into work done. If we are going to pay people to do the work,
shouldn't we pay everybody, including the people who would be willing to do it for free? Wouldn't that get real expensive real quick?
And for the people who only do it for the money, that isn't going to work wonders on their enthusiasm, is it?

There are many projects where they hire professionals to help the project along using donations. The project is still done by volunteers also and one project I know of has been going for years in this way without issues.

PS. Helping to make a game in your free time and doing it full time are very different things and having a few people doing it full time will reduce development time by a very large amount.

I would be happy to participate in this development.

When is this project taking place?

We are currently in the very early stages of development and still getting organized and working out the game details. I would like to stress this is a long term project and will likely take years.

If your interested in contributing, please head over to the Dev Forum and create an introduction thread in the recruitment forum.
