Newbie with question about mods?

Hello everyone. I just got this game a couple of days ago and am liking it. Especially after playing Sea Dogs to death. But I seem to be a bit confused, especially after visiting the forums. First off, where can I find some good documentation on this game? I can't seem to find a site with any real helpful information and even gamefaq.com only has a couple of tiny walkthroughs that are mostly for the XBOX version and even contradict one another in some areas. So I guess my questions are:

1. What is a good site to download mods and walkthroughs for this game? Piratesahoy doesn't seem to have anything in their mod database... And also, after reading a thread where someone was saying you have to install several mods in the proper order to get the build 13/14/whatever working I'm even more confused. What exactly do I have to do? Also, does installing mods invalidate save game files?

2. After reading the forums and watching some gameplay videos, I see features that my game simply does not seem to have (looting corpses for example). Do mods add tons of new features or am I doing something wrong on the vanilla?

3. How exactly does smuggling work? I set up the meeting and even go at night (not sure if it matters) but I ALWAYS get caught. I've reloaded at least 2 dozen times only to fail over and over. I read one guide that said your luck didn't matter, and another that said it did. So is it even possible to suceed without getting caught with a luck skill of 1? It's quite frustrating that the only real viable option when you're caught is to reload, since even if you win the battle that nation now hates you.

4. Is there any real point to firearms aside for getting in a little extra damage at the beginning of a battle? Once they close the range, the only option I can see to get far enough away to get another shot in is to dash backwards many many times...but that takes a while. And if I use officers as meatshields, they die quickly and I usually lose at least one every battle.

5. What determines how strong opponents are while boarding? Is it directly and solely related to your crew quantity vs theirs? Or are their other factors involved such as melee skill like in Sea Dogs?

That's all I can think of right now. I'm sure most of these are covered somewhere on the forums, but half an hour of searching has only left me with a headache and more confused than when I started. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thankyou.

It you follow the instructions, there should'nt be any problems! You gotta remember it's
Mods you dealing with, so its a bid different than installing a game!
As far as walkthru, no there is none, but lots of hints and howtos in this here forum!
Hope you're enjoying the game and the most fun is to discover things as you play the game!
That's the way I do it and the joy of playing last a lot longer that way!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

that aside, i'd also like to know how to loot those darned corpses. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="<_<" border="0" alt="dry.gif" /> guess it was my vid you saw on youtube eh?

For me looting the corpses works (if they have something to loot). Walk around on the corpse (no piety - you're a pirate) until you see the 'Open Corpse' symbol, then press the Action key (F3 default).

You can change settings to loot corpses either in Internalsettings.h or Buildsettings.h.
After a long time of not playing I lost track! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it. So, what's the difference between Build 13 and Build 14 alpha 6 or whatever? Is there a features list somewhere that I can get without having to dowload the entire mod to get the readme? Oh, and what is wrong with my smuggling? It still never works... Thanks again!

well, you just need luck for smuggling. that's it.

build 14 alpha 6 just has a lot more features. i think it's the best build 14 version so far. of course, it's still not nearly as stable as build 13 update 3. still, i'd recommend b14a6 because it has some really nice features including sailing to another island without using the worldmap with all kinds of random events along the way.

Alright, I'm still not getting how to smuggle. I am caught almost every time. I have had 1 success so far. Does your own personal luck skill have to be high? Or can you just use an officer with a high luck score? I've got one with a luck of 7 and still I fail nearly every time. And yes, he is in my current group. Does the probability of success calculate when you first talk to the guy in the tavern to setup the drop? Or when you speak to the actual smugglers? Because what I generally do is save right before making the transaction and reload from there if I fail. I just don't understand why the programmers would make the probability of success so low and the penalites for failing so great you basically have to just reload a save game until you succeed. Are you all using a mod that fixes it or am I still doing something wrong?

Edit: Oh, and what does morale do? I noticed that if it falls to low your crew mutinies and you lose the game. But is there any benefit to keeping it high? See...these are the kinds of questions I have, and surely there must be some source listing all the basics like this. The manual is basically worthless, as it mostly just covers the controls and interface, and other online guides I've found are very lacking.

As far as I know, you only use the pistols/firearms/whatever for a quick punch in the beginning of the fight... you cannot expect to be able to shoot down all your opponents... the are flintlock weapons, they take ages to reload... shoot 'em up with everything you've got and slash away at 'em... that usually does the trick... a good pistol can with a bit of luck take a mans life, but most of the times they take about half his hitpoints... which isn't really that bad... but in the mod you have to buy ammo and gunpowder for your guns, and you cant carry around very much... so you have to rely on your trusty old cutlass to win...

you need your own luck skill.

morale determines enemy attack and hp in comparison to that of you and your crew. the enemy morale also plays a part in this.
