I'm not sure you can buy a man-o-war. My favorite method of getting large ships is to sail out and look for encounters between two groups fighting. If the ship I'm looking for is in a hostile group, I'll board and capture it. If not, I'll sail away and try again with another group.
I've had a lot of 74 gun SOL's, but only bought one. The rest were pirate quests given by the governor. Depending on your game settings, you might not encounter a ship this large on a pirate quest.
Considering that you want to board and capture the Black Pearl, you can do that in any ship. As long as it's fast and maneuverable enough to stay out of the gun arcs of the enemy ship, you can take out the sails with chain shot which will leave the Pearl completely immobile, unable even to turn. Or just reduce the sails below about 30%, which will reduce the turn rate by half, making it easier to stay out of the gun arcs while you approach to board. This is how I deal with all large ships in my sloop (with 6 pound cannons! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> ).

So far I have seen the Pirate type 72 gunners for sale..and other " battleship " " line ship " Types...Pirates seem to always have the biguns on sale...next is the Spanish..then the brits..the largest Brit ship I bought was a Large frigate. Unless you count a royal galleon or whatever I bought to carry goods ...I didn't like the waller pinnace...punny little guns don't help much.
I was hoping the ship yard selection kept changing and that line ships would be available....I can always attack the British to get one but I am waiting until the end of the quest line .
I modded the British ships to be slightly better than the rest then the French and Portugese..with different strength and weakness..I liked the way they nerfed the Spanish and pirate ships...seemed realistic enough . So I left them alone .
