New to the build mod, some problems

Hi all, i have newly discovered this mod and it really seems great, but i had some problems when starting a new game. I would like to know if its because i installed something wrongly or if there is another reason.

Firstly when I start a new game with the nathaniel hawk character and dont skip the tutorial part, i get stuck on hte ship after the fencing tutorial, i cant leave the ship and the next scene is not laoded i can run around the ship and stragngely the walkable area is not consistent with the ships model( i can for example walk in the air). This does not happen if i simply skip the tutorial.
Second problem is really annoying when the game is tunning and I go tho the menu with F1 and enter the options menu after leaving the options part resume game new game etc are all greyed out. only load game and quit work.

On a fresh install of potc I installed the build 14 beta 1 full, and ölet it run the batch file, Then I installed patch 6 full and ran the rename.bat batch file.

Have you looked through this thread devilduck?

http://forum.piratesahoy.net/index.php/topic/14915-build-mod-and-forum-faq/

scroll down to the second and third posts from Pieter and all the info on the correct installation is there, if none of that seems to be the issue, see about enabling the 'error logging', also described in that thread, and then you can post those logs so we can maybe understand better what the problem may be. It sounds like some kind of installation error to me, but maybe tell us if you on a laptop and your specs and OS etc as that all has a bearing on the issue.

From where you stand during the fencing tutorial if you walk past the mast and turn right, the exit should be the gap in the side there. Walking on air is not normal.

If you are playing POTC and want to mess with options, then you should save first. The game engine does not do autosaves. :eek:k

I'll add that the 'walking on air' thing may be down to your using 'side step'(the a+d keys) which is a mod added feature that the original game didn't support - using either the A or D key will make you travel through solid objects!! It's mentioned in the controls text, although that isn't always easy to find currently(makes note: sort out an obvious easy to understand 'manual' to be placed in the main PotC directory).

Hylie has covered your 'not able to leave the tutorial deck area' problem. One other pointer is watch where Malcolm Hatcher goes, and follow him to that point of the ship(a sort of cut out space in the hull side) you will see the icon to leave the ship to go to port. All the ships in the game will have an area you need to go to to leave the ship(as in a real ship!).

In terms of your second problem hitting F1 and not being able to carry on with the game, that is just a feature of the mod to stop crashes in your game. If i find i've accidentaly hit F1(say instead of F2) during a game and can't get back i save the game and reload to that save position. It's best to do this(save a game first) if you plan to enter the options menu to change things.

putting a manual in the main directory won't solve the problem, because the average player is not going to dig around in the main directory. options can only be configured if you haven't acessed the menu through an already loaded game.

I can access and change 'Options' anytime i want, i adjust volume during a game, as i can before starting one?(the difference is if during a game i can't 'resume', which i think was devilducks issue) :shrug

In the main directory we already have a 'Manuals' folder with a PDF in it(which is the original game manual from the look of it, might be a good idea to stick a readme in that making it clear), and a 'Documentation' folder with the various 'New Horizons' PDF files. I have an updated Default Key Assignments.txt in the later, and it was the first place i looked when i couldn't remember the controls :shrug

that doesn't mean other people look in it though. heck, i didn't know they were in there. believe it or not, there are some people who just install and play a game rather than dig through it's files.

Where'd you get that "Manuals" folder from? I never saw the game's original manual in PDF! :shock

Indeed it seems we can do whatever we want, but players don't read the manuals and forum members don't read the FAQs,
so we're just going to have to deal with answering the same things again. I've tried many things to prevent that, but I've run out of ideas to try.
All I can think of is to put some general game FAQ things in the installer process, but even then I'm sure people will manage to miss it.

I think the PDF manual was included with the "economy" version of the game - which was sold without the paper manual.

:cheers

Ah yes that(in the uk) was the 'Ubisoft' 'exclusive' label version which i have then. Ok well shall i put the origional manual on the ftp for inclusion for later maybe(just as a point of history?), or will it confuse things maybe?

xD: And i nearly complained about having two different folders for the game documentation!! Glad i didn't as it's no modders fault!

It'd definitely be useful to have that original PDF manual on file somewhere. :yes

Ok no problem, it's on the new ftp(.com. The old .net one i couldn't access for some reason?) in my 'Documents/Text' folder inside the 'manuals' folder. But probably it should go inside the 'Documents' folder we currently use in the Build Mod, maybe keep it within the 'manual' folder including the txt file i placed with it so people won't confuse it for the Build Mod manual? something like that?

I'm not sure yet; but for now, thanks for uploading. How big is it?

As this problem is rather common (I recall that I've had it when I first played the mod) and we'll never be able to make people read the manual, I would propose to just automatically exit the ship when the dialog ends. That's not hard to code anyway ... any objections?

Hylie, you could always go back on the ship (before getting everything done that you need to in the beginning) and collect your stuff then.

Besides Hylie, if you don't get the extra goodies, it makes the game a little more realistic in terms of just building your character up from scratch :yes
