Make new models

Mr. Cotton

Landlubber
I think such a topich was started a hundred times. But I still dont know, with program is made for making models in Potc.

Hmm. I think Inez's tool does something for that, but also to change colours you need a .tga reader, and I think there are more besides. Sorry I cant be of more help.

Any 3D modeller that can import/export VRML 2.0/97 <i>may</i> be used for the model itself. 3DS MAX (and Cinema 4D) are two quite (rather) expensive things that few people have, but that works. I have not tried any freeware modellers with this yet, but there might be some. <b>The Tool</b> by Inez is used to convert the VRML (.wrl) into a .gm so the game can use them.

And for doing textures, all you need is a paint program that can save Targa (.tga) files - Window's paint can't, but there are others - or use a converter. Then use the <b>ConvertorTX</b> to save it as a .tga.tx that the game can read. Then you can use the Tool (above) to change the texture if you go to <b>Edit Scene</b> and select a texture, without having to edit files or such.

That is my understanding of it anyway, but I may be all wrong... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Mister Cotton,
In the pinned topics in POTC Modding, there's a thread called POTC Modding Wiki's...(I can't remember the rest,) that will get you to the Wiki's that the modders have written. They are very helpful, especially Catalina the Pirate's because it is almost a step by step guide.

Here is a link to the Wiki's

<a href="http://robotsdontbleed.com/wacko/wakka.php?wakka=Tutorials&v=28e" target="_blank">http://robotsdontbleed.com/wacko/wakka.php...Tutorials&v=28e</a>

and here's another that will take you to downloadable tools, including Inez's, that should get you started.

<a href="http://robotsdontbleed.com/wacko/wakka.php?wakka=Tutorials&v=28e" target="_blank">http://robotsdontbleed.com/wacko/wakka.php...Tutorials&v=28e</a>

Now that I think about it, I don't know if the link to Inez's Tool is the most up to date version or not, but I think Inez put a link in the pinned thread that starts, " Facemaker ..." and you can get it there. Hope this is helpful to you. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Mister Cotton,
One word: Backups, backups, BACKUPS! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

I'm sure you already know this, but it's a really good idea to make a backup copy of any file you are going to change, I'm sure the others will "back me up" <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> on this.

Like I said, Cat's Wiki is really helpful, but don't hesitate to post a question if you run into a problem, there are a lot of talented people doing a lot of beautiful reskinning around here and I know that they are always willing to help and offer direction (or encouragement, or sympathy, or rum <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" /> ). Good Luck, and looking forward to seeing what you come up with. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Yup, just ask, Mister Cotton, and you will find a lot of people willing to help. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Nice to see some more modelers around here! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Good luck in your quest there, Mr. Cotton! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> Definitely ask, if you get stuck. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Thanks for beeing so helpfully. I hope I will not disappoint you.

EDIT: I used SirChristopherMings Link. And im downloading Inez Diaz Tool for locationediting. Can i also edit Models with it?

You are welcome, and don't worry - if you make something it will be welcome, and if not, well, you are still welcome anyway! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

No, the Tool is mostly for importing/exporting to/from the game, you will still need some kind of modelling program to make/edit the models themselves. You <i>can</i> however switch heads and change textures with it! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> Also, I bet there is things I have yet to discover about the Tool... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops2" border="0" alt="oops3.gif" />

Unfortunately I haven't really been able to find a freeware editor yet that properly handles VRML 2.0/97 - but then, I am not completely at home on that scene... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

The modellers so far seem to be using 3ds Max, Maya and me using Cinema 4D, but these are rather expensive... Of course, if you find a program that can convert .obj or such to .wrl (VRML) then you can (possibly) use any program that can edit .obj, although I cannot say for certain if that works.

To convert VRML you can use Deepexploration that is available somewhere on this site (the ftp, I think).

yes, Anim8or can export/import .obj, for instance. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

So, if converting to/from VRML with Deepexploration, as Inez say, then you should be quite able to use Anim8or...

I will try it myself to see if it works and get back to you. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/type_1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":nk" border="0" alt="type_1.gif" />

That's funny, that's the same kind of back up I usually get from Lady Cat! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/razz.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":razz" border="0" alt="razz.gif" /> Yup. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Don't worry, Mr. Cotton, we're all here to help if you get stuck - and as HSL says, if you have something to contribute, we will welcome it happily, but if nothing works out, well, you're still welcome! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Ooer, great minds think alike, eh, Cat? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Mr. Cotton, Anim8or may work, but it is a lot of work to convert those files back and forth, heh - I could not be bothered doing a complete test... I got a model, minus the texture, into Anim8or and out again, but the .wrl failed to load in the Tool. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

That, however, was probably due to some export/import setting that <i>I</i> messed up in Deepexploration rather than anything else, though. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

As they say, all these scarvy landlubbers, uh, scary pirates... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" /> ...if you wonder about anything, just ask! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Actually I think Deepexploration has so far only been tested for models without animation (before the tool could export vrml and keep the animation data). So I'm not sure if exporting models with animation information will really work. It depends on the number of digits Deepexploration writes into the wrl file - you need six digits, of which the last two will be the bone numbers.
But if that's indeed a problem let me know - maybe we can work something out.

I got Cinema 4D. I hope its not so hard to make some models.
But where can I get the program to change gm-files to other files?
