Land Lubber 101

Petros

Captain of "La Nao"
Storm Modder
We be start'n with an ordinary yet spacious ship cabin that we be want'n to turn into a town residence all fancy and such.
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/7888greeb/991058.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Very dark it tis!
Tis easy on me eyes but, alas, the fancy town ladies don't never want to visit me here.
We be need'n to lighten up dem walls a bit. I be chang'n em from wood planks to plaster.
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/7888greeb/991059.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Big difference aye Matey!
Tomorrow we be do'n floors. Arrrgghh!

Back again Mateys!
Now about that floor. Seems like de ladies really go for that French "Parquet" stuff.
Had the carpenter and crew work all night to oblige.
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/7888greeb/991255.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Now the old rug looked fine with the old plank floor, but me thinks it needs to be changed as well.
De ladies get more expensive by de minute <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/7888greeb/991256.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

This old Armoire has seen better days. Rather than carved wood, I went for a brass grill work look, on the front and side. I also changed the oak to cherry wood.
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/7888greeb/991323.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

The door ... well, let's just continue with the cherry and parquet theme.
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/7888greeb/991324.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Tomorrow I redo the chairs. ... edit: done!
Drab old chairs are now mini thrones. I also changed the window glass to get a better view.
Went back to stock POTC for the glass.
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/7888greeb/991325.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Even boxes and chests can be improved.
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/7888greeb/992221.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I notice you managed to change the background to a land background as well. Nice! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

looks real cosy! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

And a real pain it was! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

The cabin01.gm is over 20 units higher than the normal town backgrounds!

Aye, and it get's even better.

I'll continue to edit the first post adding improvements as I go.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_praise.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="icon_praise.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbs1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2up" border="0" alt="thumbs1.gif" />

better put a big heavy bar in front of the door to prevent the place being filled by to many people. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbs1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2up" border="0" alt="thumbs1.gif" /> a nice, stylish, expensive one of course. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> it's amazing what some restiling can do! could you make more diverse governors' residences with this? that would be nice. all those copied locations get boring. and as you are doing such a fine job, you seem like the man to do it! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

The thin bars running up and down over the locks and knobs of each door will have to do.

As for Governor's residences, yeah, old models can be re-skinned to make new looking locations.
That is what we've done to add so many new characters, and town building exteriors have been changed that was as well.

Speaking of exteriors.
I'm getting bogged down a bit inside this cabin01.gm as many smaller features I'd like to change, are spread out over 6 texture files I haven't even touched yet! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

So going outside I decided to do this before and after. By now everyone must know I like it on IM! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/7888greeb/991950.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

it would be great to have some more diversity in the towns. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Oooo I'll not be do'n the whole town.
This is just my place at the town "Plaza".

You have to be careful changing parts of a whole town texture.

Changes that make one building look nicer might make other locations in other sections of town look bad, or out of place.

not the entire town, just bits of it. like you're doing. it would be fun to have your house in-game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> just as a place to visit. we could call it petros' home. maybe even use you in a quest! it would be fun to be able to visit the modders' houses in the game.

Just plain amazing, Petros. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />
You should also add a Petros character in there with a bunch of lovely ladies as well. And some funny dialog files for them, of course. Perhaps we could even think up some new game features that would only be available from Petros' mansion. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wp" border="0" alt="whistling.gif" />

Have some ladies already. they are in a room off to the side.
They take care of the place while I'm away, but I haven't done their dialogs yet.

In two years I have never felt motivated to do a quest, but now, with this place, I'm getting an inspiration.

It will involve the Viceroy's nephew, a shipwreck, a rescue, and a unique (only one in game) sword as reward.

As I know so little coding, I think it will be ready when you get back.
I'm assuming that will be in a couple of years.

And by the looks of this code, which is all gibberish to me, it will take at least that long.
Will Kell ever come back?

I personally have given up hope on Nathan returning. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

There are two newly added quests in the Build 14 Alpha version made by Bartolomeu o Portugues, so you can use these as examples for how to make quests. Also: Try to contact him to help with making your quest. I think he has the most experience with it from all currently active modders. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Things I should have no problem with:
I already know what 3 Islands will be used. (practice adding/editing locators to locations has helped)
Already have a start location, the place I've been re-skinning. (practice re-skinning locations has helped)
Know what sword model, how it will look, it's name and stats. (experience adding the Solingen has helped)
Know what models the Viceroy's Envoy and the Nephew will use, just need to re-skin. (experience adding characters and re-skins has helped)

Things I have to learn.
Dialogs. Soon I'm going to start playing with this with some other characters I've already added to my game.
Coding the whole quest thing <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> Much learning needed here.

Then you'll get to see me slapping my arms around in the shallow end of the "Kiddie Pool"

Build 14. I'll have to look those up on the ftp.

And be sure to contact Bartolomeu as well. I'm sure he'll be able to help you. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

The quests are also on the FTP, I think. If you run WinMerge on the quest files and your game version, you should be shown how Bartolomeu did it.

Whatever happened to Nathan? When I first joined, he was one of the most active members on here, then he just suddenly disappeared. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> You better not do that to us, Pieter! I'll post the last ones here.

Fancier hutch
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/7888greeb/994701.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

Same for desk, bed and table
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/7888greeb/994702.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

Close up on table to show globe stand and telescope in back.
I also changed the map.
<img src="http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/7888greeb/994704.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

Changed the painting and because it's a land location, I put in a fort, El Morro, San Juan.

I´ve been experimenting with quest problems for a while and really don´t understand the technique completely but I´ll be glad to support you Petros if I can.
