Solved Improved Build 14 Beta 3 Installation Process

Agh, you're not supposed to be installing that on the game for real. My apologies if I didn't make that clear.
I can't make the tests with the REAL Beta 3 contents, because that'll be HUGE!
So the files included are just temporary placeholders, though they probably would work if installed on top of WIP 18.

It is just the installer file itself I need comments and suggestions on. Making it install properly will be another step for another day.

Well, I've made some progress. My b14_beta3_installer.exe file now has the same results as manually extracting the 7-Zip files and running the Beta 2.1 RunMe.bat file.
Better, in fact, because Windows Security Stupidity messed up part of the RunMe.bat process, but the installer file DID get the job done.
Now I'm trying the exact same thing, but with my REAL temporary Beta 3 installation files to see what differences result. We'll get there.

It does take quite a while to extract that 2.3 GB 7-Zip file though. Plus the another long time to move all the files to the installation directory.
But at least it'll work. Hopefully people will be patient.

Anyway, does anyone have any comments on the thoughts I posted above? Does that all sound like a good idea? Especially those fail-safes?
And HOW can we make the installation process clearer and simpler for the end user? It needs to be set up so that people virtually cannot do it wrong, even if they tried.

Well..maybe, I don't know if this is not too hard work.. We could put some screenies in the install-menu during the install progress? Gives a bit of a taste of what will be waiting for the player if he's patient enough :D :p

That would look pretty cool. Not sure if NSIS is able to do that, but it probably is. It's one more thing to figure out though and another several MBs for people to download.
Plus.... the process takes so long, I doubt people will be wanting to look at it while it's running.

Funnily enough, if this works out, the Beta 3 installer file will be around 500 kB. Yes, KILO-byte. :rofl

Once I've got a proper workable version of the installation files, we should see if it DOES work properly when installed to Program Files.
I do believe the installer gets more rights than RunMe.bat, so perhaps things could actually go back to working like they SHOULD on that account.
Would be pretty cool if the default installation directory would be NOT a problem.

And maybe.. can you advice the installer to work more in the background.. so the player can still do something else with his PC while installing :shrug

I presume you are mostly working on the installer but I want to send along two thoughts.

First the Gov on Tortuga can't load his dialogue and second I went to Cartagena for the first time and WOW! It is beautiful. Kudos to whoever did that. :bow

QUESTION:
There is about 80 MB worth of now-unused COL files from the stock game.
Do we care about removing that to clear up the users' disc space?

And maybe.. can you advice the installer to work more in the background.. so the player can still do something else with his PC while installing :shrug
You can do that already. :yes

First the Gov on Tortuga can't load his dialogue
Perfectly true. Was another Relation Agent error. I fixed it a few days ago, but didn't upload the files yet because I've been busy doing other stuff. Soon.... very soon....

I went to Cartagena for the first time and WOW! It is beautiful. Kudos to whoever did that. :bow
Bartolomeu did the original work, then Armada sorted out the island model and I improved a couple of textures here and there.
The completely new town location is adapted from Voyage Century Online.

Well, my first test was actually surprisingly quick. Did the whole thing in maybe half an hour on my external HD. I reckon this is showing real promise! :cheers

And the WinMerge with the result was pretty successful too. Just a few differences to take care of, which I have just done.
Next up: Testing it again. If it proves to be working, I'll be uploading the FULL files straight after for internal testing.
And then I hope everybody is willing to do a full, clean reinstall and see how it works.
Also.... try to break the installation process, of course. :cheeky

I just noticed there were a lot of doubled up files in the installation that were supposed to be "batched" later.
Removing those reduced the uncompressed modpack files from 8 GB down to 7 GB. Well, that'll save some downloading!
Just have to make sure that no files end up being missed up. But that is just a matter of time.

We may actually get under 2 GB total size now. Not that it matters, because the new system should be an improvement either way.
Plus it'll be nicely future-proof for if we DO go over again.

Edit: Hmm.... no such luck just yet. Still 2.34 GB. Strange, really. I thought that's what it was before I removed those files.
Maybe I did something wrong in-between. Oh well, we'll get there. :shrug

You make it and me and my 15 second attention span will break it if it gets too complicated. :dance

Well, I believe I've got it! I'm uploading my huge archive now so that in something like 8 hours people will be able to see the new installation method in action.
Until the real Beta 3 Installer is made, all future updates will be based on these files and this installer method for further testing purposes. :doff

Yep, confirmed. The new installer results in my own exact game version. So that's good.
Look forward to the test version as soon as the upload finishes.

First REAL Test Version of the complete installer now available from http://www.piratesahoy.net/threads/build-14-beta-3-progress.20686/
As said there, please try to break it! And let me know anything that is confusing/could be further improved/clarified.

Stuff to try:
- Install to non-game folder
- Install to Program Files
- Install without archive file present

Plus.... you'll find out more once the first Update file is posted soon. Mwuhahaha! :wp

If it isn't much trouble to remove them, then why not? Unused files are a waste of space. :shrug
