Back on the original question of how to get money -- I like to start out taking trade quests and escorts. Maybe you don't get quite the money you do pillage and looting, but neither capturing ships and nor trading gets you experience like the trade and escort quests do.

And experience is what you need more than money when you start. Then, when you're stronger, let the pillage begin.

But I find that working in the service of a country is quite profitable. You gain loads of money, experience, ships, and in return gain much land which also wields a high profit.

Especially with the landowner ability. You have to get the two commerce abilities first, but it's worth it because this increases your personal wealth.
