You can rob them. First talk to them, then knock them out with your fists, use a thief's knife on them or kill them. When looting, you can take all their possessions. If you're in bad luck, four cops will come after you (in the latest modpack version), but it is a very fast way of getting money and weapons. Only a short time ago. CCC added lootable corpses, and converted the thief's-knife and stun to open the itemstranfer interface along with making corpse-looting do that.
That means you can take every single item the NPC has--and traders store their stock as personal items...

Those lootable corpses lend a really fine touch to the game. After getting over the initial shock of having to kill off some of the female brigands who attack me (they die with a n anguished scream, oh nooooo!), I really started getting into strategies to dispatch the groups who attack you - work the corners and when the bodies start stacking up the ones bringing up the rear can't reach you - so you can shoot them at will without worrying about being shot yourself (if you don't shoot "first" they won't shot at you, right?).
Only thing I'm missing is the chance to loot potions from the corpses. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> Did that get added, or not?

Cat, I'm rewriting the whole item assignment backend, so yes, all sorts of things will be getting assigned.
If you play at higher diff levels, they will shoot--first, last, and always.
Though I'm not sure if they're intelligent enough to shoot through bodies--they may think 'no enemy here.'
If needs must, I can add a hack to characterupdate to force shooting if are dead bodies in the way but a pchar beyond.

...I had two "townbandits" fire at me as I ran for the tavern to hire an officer so I could view the model! They missed, mind you, but this is when starting a new game!
