Following the dimensions disaster, I have lofted the new hull:

You may notice it's a two decker still, since I thought it's good to have one at hand in case I (or anybody else) will be of a mind to make the Ardent.

Of course, this one is soon going to be razeed. :checklist

He created the Ardent storyline for the latest version of the New Horizons mod.
He also added some slight Easter Eggs to link with the later "Ardent class" ships.
So... Let's just say he likes "Ardent". ;)
 
Oh, later Ardents, the converted indiamen, were a pure disaster, as far as Nelson is quoted...

But I will keep that in mind. :)
 
Good idea making the full sized hull. It would be interesting to compare that (without the rest of its fittings) with the new Indy once it's finished.

Hopefully you can carry over many of the details of the current model and just resize/reposition as needed?

Mainly, yes, except those I would like to change/improve/add interiors, on the occasion. I do envy your hatch covers, by the way.

It will take some effort, though, to verify the scale of various details (like guns and masts), and a whole new operation of fitting ropes and ratlines.

All this without mentioning the hull inner side, new deck, hull details, gun ports... All this has to be done anew.

Actually, I'd be interested in that ship for an entirely different reason. The real "Ardent" class were 64 gun 3rd rate ships of the line. That's not far off the 60 gun ship I need for the Natividad for my "Hornblower" sidequest. Ideally I'd want an actual 60 gun ship, but I could deactivate a few firing locators to bring it down to 60 guns and retexture it into a Spanish version. In any case, it would be better than what I have now, which is a "Fleuron" with a spanker replacing the lateen on the mizzen and even more guns deactivated because the original has 66 guns.

The "Ardent" class referred to in an Easter egg in the storyline is the class to which HMS Indefatigable belonged. It's "later" because the storyline is set in the "Golden Age of Piracy" period, so anything floating in Napoleonic times is "later". ;)
 
Cheating a little.

I have a (unfortunately, low res) set of drawings for HMS Anson (in 64 variant), which is, again, a close relative to the Indy.
While having a slightly different hull form, especially underwater - Indy's forms look finer, as the whole Ardent class was copied, according to some sources from a French ship, while Intrepid was wholly British-designed - the upper works and the inside configuration is very close, so I did this:

The cutouts give a usable impression on deck configuration, beam sizes, planking widths and what not.

I am very tempted at the moment to make the inner side of the hull complete, with the hold, maybe with less details inside, but still to retain the general layout. Just in case.

Expanded the hull to outer and inner shell (lattice tool can do miracles here) - the distance includes the planking, but not the main wales, they'll be added later. On the same occasion I enclosed the lower stern and added (tentative) parts of the keel. It's slow, but progressing steady.

I suspect few will notice the difference between this and previous post, but, after long and, frankly, frustrating study of "how the keel (the keelson, more correctly) looks from inside the hold", I realized I had to go back to basic hull lines and redo everything from there.

In the process the depths of the internet had awarded me with a good resolution profile for the two-decker variant (I had to search for Agamemnon, of all ships, for that), and that allowed me to take a closer look at a transom, which drove me mad for the good part of the week. In the end it was the Victory who saved me amidst all the versions I saw on different models, and what a fool I should have been not to look there in the first place :modding

Now I can get back to the hold, huh.

I just decided to put accuracy before speed this time.
Of course, I remember it's a game model, and there will be enough details omitted to keep the face count at bay, but the inner works are a fascinating system themselves :)
 
Anyway, the most disparaging part of the affair was the discovery that the vile British drafted the hull lines without planking :)
 
:checklist
The inner side of the hull, keelson, deadwood, it's cover, and some fastenings (those are really low-poly, but I wanted them to appear anyway).
It looks simple enough, but believe me, it was anything but easy. o_O

This process is different from modeling a ship from wood, for example - since you have to reproduce only the faces that are visible, omitting everything between the plankings, and it is sometimes difficult to understand which parts reach outside and which don't, and how they intersect.

Approaching cutting holes and razee'ing the hull - very carefully, as I found I am almost afraid of such drastic measures :)

The whole interior, including the hold and orlop deck configurations are very different for the frigate and the two-decker, so after cutting the gunports along the main gun deck, I will finally fork the models, and concentrate on completing the frigate.

In a sense a large part of this work is already done - in the previous model.
I will have to redo the decks, though, and will add some inner walls with doors, main cabin interior, and ladders and hatches on the way up.
 
Well, I want to somehow make up for supplying literally a wrong ship the last time :D

And explore those parts I ignored the last time, considering them redundant for a game model.
