Hi!

xDHx

Landlubber
Hello! I am a 21 year old Spanish boy who has been following this forum for a few years but I have not registered until today.
First of all, it is obvious that I am here because I like video games from the Caribbean Sea, especially historical or realistic ones.
I would like to ask some questions:
-Is Hearts Of Oak definitely dead? And New Horizons Remaster?
-I would like to know about the latest pirate themed games, especially if they are RPGs. What do you know? (Removing: Sea of Thieves, Sea Dogs/Age of Pirates Saga, Blackwake y more casual games like the new AC pirates game)

Ahoy there and welcome to the forum! :cheers

Is Hearts Of Oak definitely dead?
Yes.

And New Horizons Remaster?
I haven't heard any updates on it for a while.
@Armada, @Captain Murphy or @Flannery would know better.

@Captain Murphy and @Flannery have some good stuff in the works.
Other than that, I'm not familiar with the latest games, so I'm hoping someone else can give you additional suggestions. :doff

Unfortunately, it's pretty much silent at the moment, with several titles either stuck in Early Access (forever), or trying to get funds on Kickstarter. So I don't know if you are only looking for finished ones - in which case you have to look for older games like Tempest or Salt, though they are great games - or are desperate enough for new stuff that you are also willing to buy EA-games. ;)

Thank you for the welcome and thanks for your answers to my questions

Buaf.
I would like to see an improvement in the pirate RPGs regarding what is already there, but it seems impossible.
As for the two games you recommended me: Tempest I do not like anything, basic, the theme of magic things with pirates seems wrong to me personally, graphically the water goes bad and makes me nervous. And Salt did not know him, I'll try it. Thank you

It seems the only game we have any practical control over is 15 years old.
I'm still impressed by the cool variety of gameplay options we managed to add to PotC: New Horizons.
But I also really do hope eventually the good things of this end up making its into the next generation.
That has proven to be far more difficult than anyone had hoped and also more difficult than most people could possibly have imagined.

It really looks like that we'll never see a game like PotC again. It was possible once to develop a game like this, but nowadays, not so much apparently.

How much content does PotC actually have in vanilla-state without mods?

@xDHx

If you're feeling desperate enough, you could give Naval Action a chance.

It does seem like that. I think player demand has changed; I've got the impression people now want "realism" (but not ACTUAL realism; only fake!) and very fast gameplay with a fair bit of hand-holding.
Plus, graphics seem to be nearly considered just as important as gameplay.

Then there are the massive discussions on "realism vs arcade", "realism vs fantasy" and "realism vs history" that massively confuses everyone.
(My answer: just do it all at the same time! We've proved that is mostly possible. ;) )
And there are substantial nonsense politics in the pirate game communities, along with a new "sell the game before it's finished" approach in general.

The gaming world certainly seems to have changed a lot since 2003 and I myself certainly cannot keep up.
I'm probably a fair bit too old-fashioned... :shrug

Without mods, there was a LOT less content, but it did have:
- The base game mechanics (walking/sailing/boarding)
- One (non-realistic) island per nation; two for England, plus the Khael Roa story island
- Somewhere between 10 and 20 unique (but relatively low-detail and unrealistic) ship models; each with 2 texture variations
- One playable character: Nathaniel Hawk
- One storyline (kept in New Horizons as "Tales of a Sea Hawk")
- Most of the sidequests (strangely, New Horizons adds more FULL STORYLINES than sidequests! o_O )
- Two repeatable quest types: cargo delivery and merchant escort

This made the game very basic and fairly boring outside the main storyline.
But it also made for a tremendous base for modding, with a lot of unfinished code left in by the developers that we could fix and finish here.

Of course this is a very brief overview, so feel free to ask if you have any more questions on it;
for example if you're curious if specific content in New Horizons was from the original game or if it was mod-added.
Chances are I can tell you straight away. ;)

Yes, there is; ME! :cheeky

Okay, okay, point taken :p

I just compared it to my experience with other games I only played heavily modded. I mean, I have some 1.5k hours in M&B, but I could tell you zip about vanilla gameplay :D

Fair enough. If there's a good mod readily available, why bother with an imperfect original game?
I only played the stock game because I didn't know this place existsed just yet. And then the mods here were still relatively limited at the time.

the biggest problem that I see to that game is the price, which to be a game style ftp aircraft, tanks and ships ...

And only since I have use of reason, the games have changed a bestiality and I personally, although graphically there are real delights and there are very good games of gameplay/history, to general lines the AAA industry tends to become more "casual" and that does not work for me at all
Luckily PC players have endless games, which are already, some hidden gems and all small launches and not so small there. The only problem is that handling so much information becomes very complicated today...

What brings as extra content today NH?
I've just played the saga completely vanilla, now that I can not find anything and I want an RPG of this style is when I installed SD2 with NH
Is it compatible with other mods? Is there one that is worth combining with NH?

What brings as extra content today NH?
Ooh, LOTS and LOTS of stuff. You can find some details here: Pirates of the Caribbean: New Horizons mod
And also here: New Horizons | PiratesAhoy!

In short, there are:
- Many more complete storylines and a couple of extra sidequests.
- A mostly realistic worldmap with more islands and towns.
- Hundreds of high-detail ships and improvements to the existing ships.
- Improved free play with Letters of Marque, more types of repeatable quests, hidden treasures, more interactive NPCs, etc.
- Six historically accurate time periods, with different clothes, flags, ships, nations, relations, etc.
- And much, much more.

Is it compatible with other mods?
No, it's not. But it doesn't need to be because:

Is there one that is worth combining with NH?
No, there isn't. "New Horizons" already IS a combination of virtually all the good mods that were ever made for PotC. Basically, if something was good, we'd try to find a way to include it.
There are lots of settings available so you can enable/disable certain features and tweak the game experience to your liking.
In other words, you could say that "New Horizons" isn't a mod; it is ALL the mods. :rofl

This is beginning to sound too much like a sales pitch, isn't it? So I'll counter my earlier words by saying that there are many good things to be found for the later series in the game as well.
Sea Dogs: Caribbean Tales has two nice mods now and so does Sea Dogs: City of Abandoned Ships, as well as Sea Dogs: To Each His Own.
All those games have their base in Sea Dogs/Sea Dogs 2/Pirates of the Caribbean, but they're all different as well.

Most of those games are good even without mods (though obviously improved with them).
It is mainly the first two games (SD:CT and SD2/PotC) that really need their mods to live up to their potential.
It's difficult to say which is "best". They all have good parts and my recommendation is always to just try it all until you find the one you like.
