Ahoy gang.

As a long time player I am stumped. I have been having trouble getting the game to work with the latest patch. Very frequent CTDS. Finally last night, I reached a point where I could not load any saved game or start a new game. So I uninstalled the game deleted all the left over files and did a full reinstall.
The original game, Build 14 beta full, runme.bat, patch 6, rename bat. and now when get past the intro and try to start a new game, it immediately goes CTD. I am completely at a loss. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

We know the game works. Others do not have this problem. Soo. What would cause your specific problem? A bad download? That happens. Hardware issues? I just had a problem with the hard drive getting heavily fragmented in spite of it getting scanned every 3 days. Installing in program files? :shrug

Thanks for responding. My disc is de fraged once per week automatically. Plenty of space on the hard drive, etc. I know the game works this version has worked for me before, but with lots of CTDs during game play. It makes me think there is an issue with the installation.

Pieter, it has been so long since I looked at error logs I have forgetten how to turn it on and where to find them. Sorry.

BTW I am using windows 7 the game is installed in a folder called program 86x

could that be it?

Bingo! You have two program files folders in Win7. Try putting PotC in its own folder directly in your hd. I install to D: POTC. The D: is my 2nd hard drive.

The information on error logging is here: http://forum.piratesahoy.net/index.php/topic/14915-build-mod-and-forum-faq/
And indeed it comes highly recommended to not have the game in any of the two Program Files folders.

Thank you. I will try that. One last question, when installing the original game, should I install direct x 9 when asked. Windows 7 comes with a higher version.p

Is your game working now mate? :nk

It is indeed. Very stable. Insatalling directly to the C:\ drive made the difference. Thanks everyone.

One side note about installing DX9. A month or so ago in another thread this came up. I installed DX9c from Microsoft and this puter started scoring higher in graphics. Win7, quad, 8gb ram, GTX275. PotC also seemed to get slightly better fps.
