Frustrated boarder, be I!

John Silver

Landlubber
How do all ye pirates board, without being blasted out o' de water first? Even if I've shredded thar sails and gutted thar crew, I'd be gettin' at least 1 broadside when closing in, and often more. Many's the time me proud ship's been sunk when trying to board a frigate/corvette/whate'er. The thing that rots me wooden leg the most is, that even dead in de water, she can turn about as fast as if she still had sails left?
I be sailing a brig now, by de way, and I would like to get me hands on a frigate or corvette, but whene'er I meet one, ripe for de taking, I end up at de bottom o' de sea, even after shootin' thar sails to tatters... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

All help much appreciated

make shure u have a fairly good combat and defenses, i would also have all melee abilities, and get a good sword. and a grapeshot,
blast your first oponent during boarding and finish him with a slash or two then try to help one of your mates, of course u need to make shure ure good at swordplay <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

if u have 2 attacking u at once try to wait until they both hit your block at the same time, then quickly thrust at one of them and block. and keep it up, its hard but with some luck you might pull it off <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Uh, Mark, John Silver above is I think talking about just _getting_ to boarding.

John Silver: If you don't mind stretching the boundaries a bit, when they start to fire hit enter, choose sailto, choose them. Should get you out of the way of the broadside (if not, do it again). Also make sure you have the grappling perks and a 10 for grappling.
In stock POTC, a ship can always fire all its guns (even at 1% health), and the turn rate is hardly reduced at all for having no sails up and/or not making way. So yeah, it's not just you.

Also, make sure you have the quick repair perk, and lots of sails and planks, and when the start hitting you, quickly activate it and it will repair you while they're firing.

Try to stay in the "corners" of the enemy's fire zones - so you cannot be hit by any cannon fire. If you can't do that, then stay on his tail - usually the sternchasers won't do much damage to you as long as you are pointed straight at them.

Make sure to stay out of their BROADSIDE range - if they have bigger cannons, they will most certainly hurt you if you get hit.

Get officers with good skills for defense and repair to be a part of your boarding crew. That will help.

And just practice. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" /> You'll get the hang of it - and soon be boarding ships with ease. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Thanks fer de advice.
NathanKell, I won't 'stretch the boundaries', and you said that de turn rate doesn't get hurt in stock POTC, is this perhaps fixed in one o' de builds?
And Catalina, I kinda figured to stay out o' broadside range( <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> ), but ye see, that be de whole problem, as even a crippled ship will be turnin' 'n' firin' at me, 'n' thar seem t' be nothin' I can be doing about it!
But if it is fixed in one o' de builds, as I be hoping NathanKell was hinting at, I might be installing mods before I thought.

Arrrr! John,what sort O' tub ye be sail'n mate,could be ye need a faster ship,till ye get de hang O' board'n,I'd always be keep'n me rudder tew her stern,nar get broadsided wid a fast ship <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Yep, they both are. 12.1 doesn't yet have destroyable cannons, but that's faked by reducing damage (i.e. 5 balls are shot but they do only 3 balls worth of damage). Destroyable cannons are done and kinda stable, but not released in a stable build yet.
And non-arcade sailing mode has been pretty much totally overhauled.

Yarrr, as mentioned I be sailing a brig. I had a schooner, but got lured by the promise of a higher class ship, even though I loved me schooner. As a pirate I usually favor fast ships, so thar be no escape once I got ye in me spyglass, but me mind was clouded by promise of more cannons and crew.
So what is the fastest, most maneuverable ship out there? I've seen corvette mentioned as being fast, but what of turnrate? And be all ships o' the same type equally fast, or should I be keepin' me eyes peeled for a faster one?

John

Harrr! John,I'd be sail'n de Black Heart an American Fast Schooner,turn on a dime an give ye a nickel back,age an treachery will always overcome youth and skill, <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

What about the Light Frigate? That's a really fast and maneuverable ship and has a lot of guns as well.

Well, I use a Corvette MM or a Light Frigate. But those two are only in the Builds, so if you want speed and firepower, Corvette or Frigate. Corvette is a bit faster, but only 32 guns, and Frigate is a tad slower, but 44 guns to compensate the speed loss. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Overall, I would recommend neither of them. I'd recommend the Build. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

Really? They're better than any other nation's ships in everything? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" />

I wasn't aware there were differences between different nation's ships? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Me neither, at least not in the stock PotC... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Yup, each nation has some stats a bit better and some worse.
In 12 I converted the old system (each nation has a separate copy of each ship) into the PRS3 system, where there's one "base" ship define and a bunch of multipliers (which I calculated from the original ships). I added pirate type based on Verruckt's multipliers.
Most all multipliers are +/- 5%, excepting English Cargo (and a numer of pirate stats)
The following, other than Pirate, are unchanged from stock.

French: normal everything.

English:
Cargo 0.9
Max Crew 0.95
Min Crew 1.05
Speed 1.05
Turn 1.05

Spanish
Cargo 1.05
Max Crew 1.05
Speed 0.95
Turn 0.95
HP 1.05

Dutch
Weight (no effect SFAIK ingame, other than build uses it for RM points) 0.95
Max Crew 0.95
Speed 1.05
HP 0.95

Portuguese
Weight 1.05
Max Crew 1.05
Turn 1.05
HP 0.95

Pirate (Verruckt's stats, roughly)
Caliber +1
Weight 0.95
Cargo 0.8 (!)
Speed 1.1
Turn 1.1
Price 1.06
HP 0.8 (!)

So, pirate ships are best in the Build? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
