Oh, the thrill of running a site ...

So many of you know the forum was hacked today <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

We've restored but apparently there was an issue with the MySQL backup tools and we didn't get a clean back-up since the 10th. I sincerely apologize about the problems incurred with that. I'm looking for a better set of tools for it right now and will get those deployed immediately.

William, care to elaborate a wee bit on where the hacker exploited? Just say "apache" "mysql" or "ipb" etc... dont need more details.

I run an IPB site myself, and if its IPB, I want to know! So I can send the code to Invision and hope they get a security fix to prevent this from occuring again.
 
Well, I guess it didn't hit us that hard, we only lost 7 days of stuff and everyone was at the movies rather than at the keyboard. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

I feel partially responsible for this one ... Should've been able to restore to this morning before this happened, but nooooooooo ... need a new script. :p

I won't put the hackers handle on the forum. I want to keep this as civil as possible. I just wished they'd come up with something better to do with their time - like build a better lightbulb, figure out what women really mean when they say something ... a cure for cancer, you know, important stuff.

Aye. Tis only a few parted lines an' holes in the sails. A few patches to the hull and some new paint an' she'll look as good as new! A mere re-fit at sea. Then we can run out the guns and blow the next hacking pirate that tires to cross our forum out of the water!

You realize that Friday was National Chikn Day ... If you walked into a Chik-Fil-A wearing a head to toe cow costume, you got a free combo meal ... NO! I didn't do it! :p

I do look on the bright side of this ... If this was phpBB like it was in the old days, we got hacked or had attempted hacks all the time because of how expoitable that system was ... It does boil down to a few things ... The more popular you are, the more you are exploited ...

Bastards, I was in first place in the RPG.

The people that have the knowledge to do these things really do need to channel these efforts to more productive work that benifits society.

I picked myself up and dusted myself off and doing pretty well again in the RPG again, but many of the players on 7/10/06 (back-up date) were not in the SPEEDWARS reset.

They prolly don't even know they are back in the game.

Ok everything is running as it should now.

But we will have to work out why we bother paying IPB for a board that can be hacked ajust as well as a free one (phpbb)
