Enter port

How do you enter port when there are enemies nearby? I was racing a few enemies towards barbados - i made it to safety well in advance of them - 5 or more ship lengths. But the 'grappling' icon was showing, so i couldnt moor. They ended up engaging me in the harnour -0 so the fort knocked the poopdeck out of them, but I was wondering how its done properly.

yeh, worked out ok this time. this was on the world map btw. But I had to wait for them to catch me in the port to move on. Plus if i had been near mutiny, starving etc - that delay might have mattered.
