Okay guys time to put your thanking caps on.

I have a simular problem as stated below, but with the straight load of the game no add ons.

ENGINE.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

AppName: engine.exe AppVer: 1.0.0.1 ModName: dx8render.dll
ModVer: 1.0.0.1 Offset: 00008e38

This happens on the screen Loading Game to a New Game. I can run every thing else. It can't be a major DX problem as I am running DX9c and I can play game like Ghost Recon (needing DX8) and Flight Sim 2004 (needing DX9) with no problems at all. So far this is the only program I am having this problem with.

Compaq says that my SIS card (Drivers updated) will play DX9 and above. So it must be something else that the game does not like with my system. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" /> This is very upsetting as I would really love to play POTC on this computer. As my only desk top is near death and I don't get to it much these days. As a matter of fact I only turn it on to play POTC. I just loaded build 12 and now it is not working right. (Wont show the invitory screen to get items onto player).

Please help.....

Hmm.
I have uploaded to the FTP four different DX8Render.DLL files (all in the archive DX8Rend.zip).
One is from the Polish 1.03 patch, one from the Russian 1.03 patch, one from the build, and one from the stock Euro version.
Note that the build version is the same as one of those (I forget which), and the R and P ones are probably identical.
Anyway, if you could make a backup of your DX8Render dll file, and try each one in turn (copy one in, rename it, try POTC, repeat). Hopefully one might help.
 
i've been having a lot of problems with engine crashes as well with the newest pre13 build, and havent had it before. so i guess that it could be a problem with the newest pre13
 
Catalina, I have never been able to play the game on this system.

NathanKell, thanks I will down load that zip file and give it a try. How do I get to the FTP down loads? I don't see them.

SP2 might be causing you trouble. I hear nothing but bad things about it...

Well this is gonna fall in line with Cat's SWAG principle but what the hey.

I downloaded build 12.1 last week and began playing POTC again. The only thing new with my computer was the build and SP2. However, I run SP2 with all startup
programs disabled aswell as non-esential XP and non xp services turned off.

This still gave me engine errors including the one with the renderer thingy. The error for me would occur when hitting the escape key from any in game menu.

I then turned music off on the options screen and havent had it crash since.

Got the same problem, have to reinstall build 12.1 everytime I want to play it. I have WinXP service pack1 (SP2 killed most of my applications so I won't install it again) and Direct X 9.0c
 
I also have SP2 installed, but I have no problems whatsoever, not with potc, nor with other games/prog's, so I doubt that's the problem <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
 
Grrrr, now I'm getting a start-up crash/engine problem too. I have SP2, but have never had a problem with it messing up PotC before.

I just installed the latest Build version today; during my last pirating binge I was using an earlier v12 and it worked fine.

*sigh* Reinstalling now; I'll try to use an old Build to see if it still works.

edit: Grrr, now vanilla PotC won't run. Uninstalling SP2 now to see if it makes an immediate difference.

edit2: That did the trick. PotC is up and running again, sans the demon-seed software that is SP2. Odd that PotC would stop working all of the sudden like this, though.
 
I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but with SP2, you probably get autoupdates - that you don't even know are being put on your computer - and something got installed that interfered with PotC. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />
 
It is a stupid qeustion but,

Where is the ftp were you uploaded th file dx8render.dll ???????

Please say it becaus i have tried everything to let the game work.
