What about the hanseatic league in denmark, the swedish vasa ^^. That's all I've heard of as for naval history of the scandinavian countries excluding vikings... In land I've heard of some of the Swedes achievements...

Greenland was very much in demand during WW2 though when the Germans kept trying to build weather stations on the coast so they could predict weather patterns affecting Europe. Greenland, of course, was lost to the Danes after the Germans invaded Denmark in 1940 and the British stationed troops there to keep it out of German hands and then later the US sent troops there to replace the British troops, which were needed in North Africa.
A story out of the war had a British official in Washington during WW2 (probably during one of the many conferences that Churchill had with Roosevelt during those years) and the official noticed that on a map on the wall it had the United States in green, Alaska in green and Greenland in green. The British official was nervous and mentioned it to his superiors, not really sure if this meant that the Americans had designs on Greenland after the war was over. It didn't turn out to be anything though, as the US handed back control of Greenland to Denmark after the war was over. Though Denmark did lose Iceland as they declared their independence.
 
Yeah the (damn) Swedes used to team up with the germans in order to literally make a sandwich-attack from both sides, and once they even walked over the frosted Oresund! The Hanseatic league you are speaking of, especially the Lübecker merchant fleet were actually switching sides several times in the PotC timeline..whatever suited them in making the tradewinds blow their way (cant really blame them) <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

American English? And here is me trying SO hard to make it British English! Harbour and such! :whipa
When I was a little kiddie we went on holiday to Southern England every year and I picked up a thing or two there.
Also, I make a point of spelling things properly both in Dutch and in English.
 
The reason I said "American English" was because I didn't feel like you were saying odd words that are used only in "British English". I guess you did just say you "holiday". I would say "vacation".

If you started talking about a "scone" I would have no idea what that is. If you talked about a "biscuit" I would not think of a "cookie" but a:

Do the British really weigh themselves in number of "stones"?!?!
People normally describe themselves as weighing, for example, "11 stone 4" (11 stones and 4 pounds) and not "158 pounds" (the conventional way of expressing the same weight in the United States)
 
I've never heard of anyone weighing him/herself in stones. I'm a big fan of the metric system. :cheeky

Funny; I'd say "holiday" when I talk/write English, but the Dutch word for it is "vakantie" which may look more familiar to you.

And... Scones for the win!!!

Of course I suspect I am being influenced by America English as well. After all, most movies that I'd watch are made in the USA and I work for a technically American company as well.
 
As far as I'm concerned, there are no 'odd words' in British English. It's the stuff you Americans come up with that stumps me. Who would call a scone a biscuit? :p

And yes, there are still many imperial measurements in use in the UK. I'm not sure why, but I suspect a certain amount of tradition and stubbornness has some part in it.

Putting gravy on a scone??? Sacrilege! :whipa

Mijn moedertaal is Nederlands, but born and raised with English.
Auch spreche ich Deutsh am höchwertiger Niveau, mais quand a vous préférez Francais je parle ca un peu.
Jag tallar Svenska och lara jag Finsk.
Enough language showing :p I do love biscuit and gravy :D
