Dirty schemes and money-making tricks

POTC V1.0, Build 13.

After some help from PiratesAhoy in escaping Oxbay with my life, I've since been working on building up a fortune. I've got a couple of questions about game mechanics that I couldn't find explained in the readmes or FAQs on here, and basic curiosity about how y'all survive in the Caribbean.

Questions first, I think :

1) What specifies what ship you're permitted to purchase? I assume it works on a level-based system, but what's the actual formula? Anybody know? Would help to know at what level I can purchase a Class 2.

2) What sets how many men board with you, and what their health is. I know health is augmented by moral, but I've already stolen a class 3 Warship (That, for some insane reason, decided to surrender to my Class 4 Fast-sailing 16gun <name of ship that I forgot>) which means I've got 410 men with good moral (According to the ship menu, which I have no reason to believe is inaccurate. Also the periodic moral updates that you get each day say they're in the high 60s.) However, I recently boarded a corvette that, if I recall correctly, has something like 200 men on board - However, they seem to outnumber of men when I board, and they have a LOT more health. Could some explain?

3) Is there a limit to the level of ship you can capture that's specific to your level? For example, I can only purchase level 4s (I think) but I have managed to capture a level 3. Does this mean I can also capture a level 2 or even level 1, or is it for example one level above purchasing power - the ships above that would be greyed out in the 'capture thing'. The reason I ask rather than just attempting to capture one is because the effort involved in taking over a Class 2 is, for the reasons I've explained in question 2, not worth it if I'm going to have to abandon the damn thing.

Now, onto the curiosity bit : How did you all make money? I've been smuggling Ebony from Isellua de M<something> and selling it for a large profit, using the extra money to purchase more ships to have more cargo space. I had, at the height of my trading power, 4 Barques and was bringing something like 500 Ebony ashore. However, it seems a bit easy because the coastguard seem to rarely turn up, and when they do they've got a lugger. A lugger. Sneer. I'm on the 2nd difficulty setting, so I'm just curious if it's meant to be this easy to amass wealth. It doesn't seem to fit, as everything else (Especially boarding, compared to build 10) is so much harder!

Note : not a complaint, I like how I'm having to work for stuff. Build 10 was much too easy, you'd basically leave Redmond, find a Frigate, board the Frigate, kill all the enemy sailors because hand to hand was very easy even at the beginning if you spent your points correctly, and crew said Frigate. You'd then use that Frigate to hunt Battleships, shove worthless officers as the captains and sell the things. Massive improvement in Build 13 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

<edit> Oh dear lord at my spelling and grammar in this post. In my defence, it's 6:21am here and I haven't slept yet. </edit>

Class 7 ships are always available. For each 3 level-ups, a new class of ship can be bought. This restriction only applies to the buying of ships. You can capture any ship you encounter, provided that you don't get killed in the process. You can modify the behaviour of this mod with the shipyard settings in PROGRAM\InternalSettings.h.

The easy and best way to make a big fortune faster than anyone: Go to Guadalupe jungle, search for François de Vigny´s house. Once you have entered in his house, kill him and grab his 100.000, get out the house and enter again to kill the bastard....repeat this process until u have a big fortune <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

he should be gone after the first time. he always was in my case, and he didn't really have any money on him.

or isn't that the guy in the lighthouse?

No, its François de Vigny...im using Build 14, later ill post some pics here, by the way, the game here cant load his dialog.

François doesn't have a dialog yet. Still needs to be made some day, but nobody's working on it.

Fixed that last year for B13, but it seems the fix got lost.

Try the file attached to <a href="http://swankyplace.com/potcbugs/view.php?id=283" target="_blank">this post.</a> You need to start a new game though.
