dine with the captain

I made them more rare than before. Now I think I should make them MORE more rare than before. AND search for all references to potions in the game replace them with badages and such.

I think that might help. The only place where it might unbalance something (that I can tell) is with Officers and landing parties of crew. Those guys need at least some regenerative ability or they're complete toast. I tend to give away most of my potions to them anyhow and the crew, at least, still manages to get killed off fairly fast. Of course, it's fairly easy to recruit new muscle in some towns too!

I didn't realize that asking crew to come ashore with you actually turns on a whole mod that adds additional land enounters and such! Now it's always on and I'm running into much more interesting stuff out there. Of course, too many crewmen make moving around a bit difficult but four Officers and four crew together, well, you feel like Sinbad the Sailor leading his lads off on a hearty adventure (sans claymation cyclopses).

Ah! Good point there. Potions and stuff pretty much remove the challenge for the player to stay alive, but for officers they're really nescessary. How are we to circumvent that particular problem? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

I WANT TO SEE THOSE OLD SINBAD FILMS!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

Is it possible to give NPCs (mainly crew, officers have useful melee special abilities and aren't quite as vulnerable if they're fighters) an innate regenerative ability? Or maybe give them natural armor of some sort since you can't equip them with armor anyhow. I've tried that...heck, I don't know for sure whether crewmen use potions, even though they equip them, though officers definitely do.

Landing party members do use potions, and you can give them armor and high quality swords.

Problem is, if they still die, you loose the stuff you gave them.

Ah. I think my problem may have been, as I recall it betimes, that I tried to give him my equipped armor and that didn't work. Let's see if that offsets the problem a little bit at least.

At any rate, recruiting new landing party members is very easy in pirate ports (and maybe others? I just started using it) and the new recruits come with their own gear.

Toughness has been rather toned down in the latest modpack versions. Good point though. Perhaps we could rewrite toughness to be an officer-only ability that would help keep them alive.

I think there's some code that prevents it, but we can find and remove that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

one thing that i can see coming though is that you would start to arrange accidents for dispensable crewmen to get their stuff. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

Uhm. But don't they use YOUR stuff from YOUR weaponslocker anyway? Except for those things that they loot from their slain enemies. Do they even loot things themselves? Sometimes I think I notice them looting stuff themselves. Might've been back when AUTOLOOT_BOARDINGS was on. My weaponslocker would start filling itself with all sorts of interesting stuff after boardings.

Wait a second. I think there's a difference between boarding parties and landing parties. Boarding parties do take stuff from your weapons locker (though I don't know that they loot anything - bodies aboard ships I've boarded don't seem lootable though the opposing captain's got unique loot in his weapons locker and storage chest if you remember to look after killing him). Landing parties are the crewmen you can bring along if you talk to crew in the crew quarters. "I need X additional men..." They seem to come off the ship with no weapons at all but a random number of healing potions. You have to talk to them to equip them with stuff that's in your personal inventory. Unless you lose a man or two and new sailors volunteer to join you in a pirate town. Those guys will come with a melee weapon of their own.

I've never seen either loot corpses but I have autoloot off for myself.
