That Cotton Mather, partly responsible for the Salem Witch Trials, was also involved in hanging pirates in Boston 1726... I was reading Villians of all Nations and I saw that name... Landlubber... As you can guess, I'm new to this Pirate thing...

But, I was looking up stuff on the Jolly Roger and I came across the theory it came from the Knights Templar... How's that? And, how did the pirate come from the Templars?

I thought this thread would be a good place to ask with the whole "Did you know..." thing.

It is said that some of the Templars who managed to escape Pope Innocent ##'s charge of heracy turned to piracy. Also their flag (red cross on white background, indentical to the sails on Columbus's ships) was rumored to be called Jolie Rogue. Also interestingly their is a story in "Holy Blood Holy Grail" about how the skull and cross bones came to be. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Welcome aboard mate!
 
It seems like a very broad term... I remeber seeing a debate on who was stronger, vikings or pirates... Could they be the same thing? Or, are they bound by regions? Are ships necessary? Could a pirate be on land - a raider? Then there's the ageless pirate... Example: Piracy in computers... so, what is a pirate?
 
Vikings are a folk. Pirating is actually doing illegal stuff and benefitting from it. like hacking or whutever. but the pirates we discuss here are basicly people who mess around with someone elses ship. you dont need a ship to be a pirate. you (yes still) have people who jump from low bridges onto inshore ships and steal all kinds of stuff. you also had people who made fires along shorelines so ships might mistace em for lighthouses in rough weather, they would set course toward it beliving it to be save passageway but actually stranding the ship on the beach or rocks. Then all ya needed to do was wait till the cargo whiped ashore. But commonly you (again still) have people who board your ship, take the crew hostage and then ask randsom or sell them on illegal slavery markets or just kill em and take the ship or just here cargo.

I hope this common knowlage will get you started here.

What aspect of era of piracy are you interested in? You've certainly come to the right place to learn about the subject. Have a look around this section of the forums and you'll find a weath of information.
