DEMO

Nah sorry mate, no word at all atm the only news on the horizon is the Beta which people should be getting word of next week i imagine, we may start to hear noises abou a demo in a month or so....hopefully

There is going to be no demo, and that´s something that does not like me. I mean, why would they choose to "hide" the game before the releasing?. All I have read so far about it sounds very good. The graphics look good also, although the screenshots tell me perhaps the game is a bit childish. A demo would make my doubts go away, but we won´t get it so Í will wait for the first opinions before buying it.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Welcome aboard mate!!!

That's pity that there aren't demo but there are many screenshots.

The whole entire crew has been devoted to making the best possible release of the actual game. As it has been stating as we are testing the game, they have testers going on around the clock testing the game for bugs and gameplay, implementing ideas and polishing it up. Making a demo would require yanking people to write up a closed copy - which takes time away from the development of the final release candidate.

There is no word if one will be released `post-production` or not. Honestly though, I think there isn't a need for one. I know everyone wants to do the try before you buy with this one - but my suggestion is to just buy it. It really is a GREAT game.

maybe they are counting on the game's past reputation. Every game site out there will give it good reviews I am sure. All the old farts like me who were in love with the original, will no doubt buy this one. I am sure word of mouth will go a long way.

And maybe they will do a post release demo. Would seem to be a good idea just in general as most games are like that now.

Hi Captain Hicks,
Not hiding anything here! As the beta testers will be happy to tell you. It's a question of timing and resources. Consider:
1) We know that the game will more copies if it's out for the holiday shopping season than if it released in, say, January, with a demo out for the holidays.
2) Making a demo requires several `man-weeks` of programming and testing, especially for this game, since you can't just "release a demo level". Not to mention the `software-piracy` risks of giving out full code that hasn't been scrutinized for protection.
3) Our resources are flat out right now, squashing bugs from the beta so that the game will make the November 16th date.

As for "childish," all I can say is that I believe you have to be over 18 to take part in the beta by the terms of the NDA, and everyone seems to be having a blast so far. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Best,
Jeff Foley

Yup, I'm having a lot of fun, and this is with a build that is still pretty buggy. Can't WAIT for the `full-on` version!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Yeah, what Jeff said! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Well¡ I hope everybody is right¡. I played and finished the original Pirates (not the Pirates Gold which I also played but was not as good) like... two hundred times? (believe me, I am not exaggerating). It´s been with no doubt the game that has keep me more excited for so long. That´s why I hope Atari don´t disappoint us¡. I understand that it´s better not doing a DEMO if doing it delays the releasing date.

By the way, I was very good at the original Pirates, believe me or not I once sailed with an english captain in 1560 (his name was Tony Hicks) and got 221 points¡. I got the title of Prince¡ with all the lands, honours, blah, balh, blah...

PS. One question I would like to make to the Atari people, altough I know that perhaps you won´t tell me but, it´s true the game will be just 6 - 8 hours long? I recall playing careers much longer in the original Pirates, although I could be mistaken.

Well, actually I always try a demo first before I buy a game and I would have liked a demo for Pirates!2 too, but I can understand Atari on this one.
Actually I'm now long enough on PA! to trust the judgement of the people here.
So all depends on what they say. And so war things look good.

@Captain Hicks: Yup, in the original Pirates the careers did last longer then `6-8` hours.

Really? Well, perhaps it´s because I´m playing Pirates! Gold only, but without taking breaks a career, even with the medicine skill chosen for a longer life, lasts about some six hours with me. And those are the ones that go as smoothly as one can wish, especially without shipwrecking or capture.

One thing to remember. Atari is not doing this game. They are handling the publishing/distribution and quality assurance stuff. And from a testing standpoint, they really have their stuff together and I trust they will do the rest very well too. But, they are NOT developing the game. Not that I am trying to detract from their role, but Firaxis is doing the game. While they do not make very many titles, what they DO make is always very good quality. That, combined with the fact that from I can tell, Sid Meier has taken an active role in Pirates! - since it's baby - makes me pretty confident in the game. And I thought all this to be true before I got into beta. Now I KNOW it to be true!

As far as game length goes, I can't really put a time on the length of the average campaign. I have played quite a few and they have varied depending on difficulty level as well as my own strategy. I CAN say that if they are indeed shorter (which I am not saying they are - don't read btwn the lines here either - I can't say as I have not really timed them), they are as much, if not more, fun than the original game. Don't get too hung up on some of these factors ahead of time.

Easy for me to say though. The concerns I see most people talking about were the same concerns I had before Beta. I was VERY concerned that they game was going to be cartoony, cheesy, dumbed down for mass appeal, "consoled", no wind, too short, blah blah blah... I can say now, Don't sweat it! It's all gonna be just fine! Now.. go preorder your copy. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Actually, I liked the cartoony Graphics from the beginning! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

One thing i think you have to keep in mind after playing the beta is that you have to approach Pirates! thinking "fun" if you think your getting the next SD2 or some kind of gritty type playstyle you may be dissapointed. But as far as Pirates! is funwise its really good and you can find yourself loosing a few hours without knowing it, always a good way to judge if you like the game or not <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Heh, regarding game graphics, I wish I could share with you some of the things I've seen in this beta so far. The version we are playing, while not quite finished, `graphics-wise`, is still very cool stuff. I love the action in the boardings - I only wish I wasn't so darned busy trying to defeat my enemy while it was going on, as the action around you is so incredibly funny and fun it's difficult not to stop and watch! I am amazed at what they must have done to create this environment - it's truly incredible.

Well a new Pirates Trailer is out. Found it on Fileplanet:

<a href="http://www.fileplanet.com/files/140000/146438.shtml" target="_blank">http://www.fileplanet.com/files/140000/146438.shtml</a>

Not that it's of any intrest for our beta players here! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

EDIT: It's not worth the download. It's not a new trailer!
