Crew Morale by the numbers

bigchief

Landlubber
I did some testing on the effects of Crew Morale.

The biggest factor is amount of gold per man. Length of time at sea factors in, but only in the first part of the journey. After a certain period of time at sea, the crew will start caring about their cut, and the amount they care will increase as time goes by. There will come a point when they have reached the maximum amount that they care, and only the amount per man matters after that. Difficulty level plays a part in how soon they get to each level of caring about thier cut, but it doesn't seem to matter in the amount per man necessary to get them to each level of happiness, once they have reached their maximum.

It is possible to sail forever without dividing the plunder, if you have enough gold per man.

I did some testing on my current save game. This crew has been at sea for 222 months. I used a trainer to change my crew to an even 100 men. Then I changed my amount of gold to see what it took to get them to each level of happiness. These are the numbers:

Less than 1004 per man - Mutinous
1004 gold to 2012 gold - Unhappy
2013 gold to 3021 gold - Content
3022 gold to 4030 gold - Happy
Greater than 4030 gold - Very Happy

In the above numbers, I had a Quartermaster, Cook, and Concertina. Removing the Quartermaster or Concertina had no effect on the numbers, but removing the Cook made the numbers change to these:

Less than 1200 per man - Mutinous
1200 gold to 2399 gold - Unhappy
2400 gold to 3599 gold - Content
3600 gold to 4799 gold - Happy
Greater than 4799 gold - Very Happy

I was playing on adventurer level. I used the trainer to change my difficulty level. Those numbers stayed true for every level. So the only difference in difficulty level is the amount of time it takes them to reach their maximum point of caring, so I did some testing on that.

The tests were done while having 100 gold per man. That number is just below the permanent Mutinous number. They were done from the very beginning of a game with the first crew. The crew starts the trip Very Happy.

<img src="http://www.bccomputingco.com/mw/MoralTable.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

After one month of Mutiny the crew will approach you and say that you need to divide. I only had one boat, so they could not take a boat, and I did not sail into and out of ports to see when the men would start quitting, and what percentage of the crew would quit. I only tested up until the Mutinous stage. Maybe, I'll do some testing on the total effects of Mutiny at another time.

Those tests were done with no items and no specialists. Adding a Cook delays the start of the decline in happiness by one month. Adding a Concertina also delayed it by one month. I was unable to add just a violin, so I am not sure what effect it may have. When I added the Concertina, I had both items. Adding both the Cook and Concertina delayed it by two months. Adding a Quartermaster had no effect on the first 3 happiness levels, but delayed the onset of Mutiny by one month.

I tried it at 50 gold per man, and at 0 gold, and those numbers dropped. I wasn't going to spend several more hours sailing around with different amounts of gold to find out the results. Just know that you will not get those numbers if you have less than 100 gold per man.

And, as I was sailing around killing time and watching the months go by, I watched my food level drop, So I did some testing on that while I was testing the other. I was in a Treasure Galleon so I could hold the max amount of food. When I started the game it said 132 tons of food was 26 months worth for my crew of 100. That 26 months worth ran out after 12 months. I then added a Cooper and the same 132 tons of food was now good for 40 months, and exactly 1 month of food was used each month. So, a Cooper does his job for sure.

To those who read the post earlier, I am sorry. There were errors in the first two charts. I have corrected them. There is a very good reason for that. It was late at night, and I had been staring at the screen for hours, after having a long New Years Eve the night before. I did some rounding, and screwed up when typing it out from my hand written notes. It is only off by about 90%. The second chart (picture) was correct.

Also, those numbers don't take into account your portion of the cut. It is amount per man on board the ship.

Interest'n chart mate, fer yer question[It is possible to sail forever without dividing the plunder, if you have enough gold per man.]
I'm trying te see how long I can go without divide'n de plunder at apprentice level first,so far I've made 420,000 in gold, age 37,not divided de plunder once, figure I can go a few more years yet
<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

If your crew is OK now, they will not get any worse unless you somehow loose a lot of gold. You have passed the initial couple of years, so time is not a factor any more, just gold per man. Now it's just a matter of whether, or not, your skills will hold out for you, or you get tired of playing.

It is possible to play for a long time, I guess theoretically, forever. I was testing to see if its possible to just keep going and going. I had intended to do this at every level but I got sidetracked by ATiTD. I did get a pirate into his 70's at Journeyman level. That was before I decided to try it at every level and I did not save that game. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

I currently have a game saved, apprentice level, where my Pirate is 76 years old.

at see 530 months (started 1660 currently 1719)
crew of 187 is very happy
Achievement Points of 126 (everything `score-able` has been done)

This is apprentice level so it has been very easy, if and when I start the other levels it will be interesting to see how far I can go. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

NOTE: I did not use any trainers, I played the game straight through. It was rather refreshing after I achieved max score to simply test theories concerning Governors and city's/settlements. The effects of massive trade on cities the effects of blackades and or city bombardments, etc etc. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Gotta ask mate,how much loot did ye acumalate <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Skull, the game is still "active" meaning I have not retired or divided the plunder yet. Also, used alot of money testing what happens to towns when you trade with them on a massive scale. In other words I would take a loss just to be able to trade with towns.. all that being said I currently only have 1,561,770 gold.

NOTE: when I typed massive trade this means a fleet of 8 ships, trade galleons or better, buying everything a town has and/or selling on certain goods and buying others, but always, if I bought, I bought everything the town had of that good.

What other factors are involved, or am I missing something? Pirating n00b here.

In my first game I divided plunder several times and then found it hard/time consuming to get a large enough crew to go raiding. I just couldn't find enough gold to keep them from mutiny due to all pirate treasures being found etc. Seems like the 200,000 I'd lost dividing was wasted if I wanted to build a fleet.

Based on those stats above I decided to start a new game and keep the crew small (~`60-80`) initially and grow it in proportion to my gold so that I could eventually have a large crew+fleet.

I'm now at 33 months on Apprentice level. I have the cook plus 97,766 gold and my crew of 120 is happy (or very happy, I can't tell from the smilie). That's only 815 gold per man but according to those figures, I should need 120,480 after 23 months just to prevent mutiny.

Is it because there is a reasonably steady stream of loot coming in or is moral shown an average of a figure calculated on a per man basis. I've had a high turnover with the crew getting down to 40 a few times and most replacements coming from other ships rather than taverns (if that makes a difference).

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> <b>Spudgy, </b>and welcome aboard! Have an ale! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/beer2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":beer" border="0" alt="beer2.gif" />

It has a lot to do, too, with a steady stream of loot, and of course, fluxuation of crew numbers. But the chart Big Chief made is an excellent resource to help you keep a handle on things! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

That chart that tells how many months until they get to thier boiling point, is just for reference. In my tests I only had 100 gold per man, and those were the numbers. I did put that I tried it at 50 gold per man and at 0 gold per man, and the numbers were lower. I probably should have added something like "and conversely, if you have more than 100 gold per man, those numbers will be delayed further". So, the more you have per man, the longer it will take to get to the mutiny stage, but the first two charts are exact, and if you reach those numbers, it will never happen.

OK, I get it now. Thanks. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />
