Need Help Crew expensive?

Hi, I only just found out about CoAS and started playing yesterday. I am playing Peter Blood as a Adventurer and I got that Spanish ship and England is hostile to me for some reason (not returning the money to the loan shark?). I just got 106 crew for my ship and the monthly upkeep is like 45k coins. Which is a lot considering I can only make 8-11k from transporting cargo from one store to another.

If I have less crew, the ship is less effective, especially when it comes to reloading of cannons. More crew means a lot more upkeep. What should I do?

I would get a smaller ship and leave this one in a port, until I am ready for such a ship.

Also while I'm here, is there a way to make other ships engagement range range smaller? Being pulled into a battle at a distance is pretty annoying.
