Cannons

pala

As this mod likes to have realistic components like the right names for the islands and settlements during that time I figured u might like some info I picked up on cannons mainly the real names for the different sizes,

Cannon specifically refers to a 42-pound Gun
Demi-Cannon - 32-pound Gun
Culverin - 18-pound Gun
Demi-Culverin - 9-pound Gun

this might be useful to make the cannon types more realistic, but its up to you guys.

Maybe we could rename them. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

To add the more modern equivalents there, such as the Carronades used on Constitution and other vessels, a Carronade is a 48 or 52 lb gun if I remember correctly.

I believe the names culverine and carronade refer to particular types of cannons rather than every cannon of a particular weight shot was called a culverine. I remember that culverines were used on land, set up by civilian contactors before the battle and fired stone shot; not sure about naval uses. The HMS Victory has, I think, two 68 pound carronades. I don't know the smallest carronade in general use, but it's probably close to what the game has.

I really prefer the names cannons and carronades, no matter what the guys called them in the 17th century.

If you guys rename them, why don't you change the sounds too, the heavier the lower or something....
If you guy's like it I could give the sounds to a Friend which could make them lower or others.....

Different cannon types already do have different sounds. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />

there's definately an audible difference. i can actually distinguish an enemy 4-pounder from a 12-pounder by it's sound. though i'll admit that it's subtle. 18-pounders are very distinct.

And indeed, I remember the original naming convention. You had a choice of Long Guns (Culverine) or Heavy Guns (Cannon).

That was the ONLY differentiation that was made. Culverine, slightly less damage but greater range. Cannon, better damage and shorter range.

And guns on sailing ships actually had a wider range of guns than what we have in game I've recently been reading up on cannon history and on ship in the era we are playing, cannons aboard ship went up to 52 lbs. Cannon that big being of course carried by the men 'o war or line ships.

The general theory was apparently lots of lighter guns, firing them as quickly as possible. There are also some pretty livid combat descriptions in some of the books I've been reading lately.

If we are about to add even heavier guns, maybe we limit ships to max. 42 lbs "long" guns and allow forts to have more options than 32 lbs "long" guns and 68 lbs carronades. Of course, code describing damage caused by fort should be properly changed. That would allow adding some kind of "upgrade fort" feature for capture colony mod.

Thats actually quite the good idea there Pirate_kk. I'd love to see the Forts get more updrades than they have.
