Can I get the original version work?

Mourning_Blade

Ahoj Pirates! I am new here.
I tried to run the original version of Sea Dogs 2 on my laptop but unfortunately it didn't work. When I installed the mod, it didn't work either. I have an Intel GPU on my laptop but my GeForce 960M should work for games instead. Anyway I installed the thing for Intel GPU in the mod and it worked. So I think the problem with the original version is the Intel GPU.
However about the mod: I honestly didn't see a trainwreck like this. I am at the very beginning of the game and I am supposed to escort and destroy the French supply ship. However, I can't sail into Martinique because French fort oblitirates me. I thought I am smart and I shored at a nearby shore and hiked to St. Martiniqe. I did all, showed my letter to harbormaster, i met the captain of the supply ship and he asks me where my ship is. I am calm, now maybe I have the permission from harbor master and maybe I can sail with my ship into harbour... I got oblitirated with fort cannons. I am really dissapointed :( Any way I can run the original with my PC? Or how to fix this problem or what I am doing wrong? I really liked the town upgrades in the mod.
Anyway, sorry if I am whining. I am so disappointed.

I can't answer about getting the stock game to work on your system.

As for the fort at Martinique firing at you in the Build Mod: it must have spotted you under a hostile flag, and now remembers you as an enemy. If you have enough money, you can go to the governor and ask for forgiveness - however, you probably don't have enough money this early.

As it's that early in the game, try starting again. This time be careful not to go anywhere near Martinique while under any flag hostile to France, at least until after you've done the part about meeting the supply ship.

Hello,

Thank you for your answer. Is there a way to change the flag? I only see a way to change it to pirate, and I doubt it would help. I selected the standart flag in the beginning and I followed the main quest line only. I did not enagage any ship or anything. Should I kill the officer who gave me info so he won't rat me out?

Indeed, hoisting a pirate flag would not help, as pirates are hostile to France as well as everyone else except other pirates!

When you're at sea or on the ship's deck, press F2 and go to the "International Relations" screen. There you can choose any nation's flag, as well as the pirate or personal flags - and you can also change the personal and pirate flags to different designs if you like.

You should not need to kill Massoni. He does try to inform on you, but only to the extent of telling the nearest guards, who will then try to chase you. If you leave the area quickly enough, you'll be clear before he even gets to the guards and certainly before the guards can catch you. But leaving him alive does not have any effect on what happens when you get to Martinique.

If Martinique fort fires at you again, post the file "compile.log", which you should find in the top level of the game installation folder. You can use the "Upload a File" button, next to the "Post Reply" button which you'll click when you post your next message here. "compile.log" should have information about why the fort attacks you.

Thanks for your help :) I will make a fresh start to the game this evening and we will see how it will go.

Ok, so I guess was was my fault to approach the port with British flag but I can swear this function was not available in vanilla game. Now Oiseau is kicking my tiny lugger's little butt like there is no tomorrow. Anyway, I'll find a way myself and delete this thread after some time.

Cheers!

Okay, I don't want to get complaining here but this is getting worse and worse. Ok, I got to escort Oiseau and fought battle with her. Even though I have fast brig, I guess it is a better ship. I am trying since morning until now. No success. Naval battles takes forever without bombs. I fight like an hour real time, I get boarded, even though I have basic defence, armour, my block gets pierced and I got one hit with full health (86 health) and die. Because I can't save during battle, an hour of gameplay wasted. Last time I lead Oiseau to British patrol thinking it would take less time. British war sloop disangages after firing 2 salvos and I am alone with Oiseau again. I battle away until she gets got out of my range, I cought it back but the game bugged. I couldn't attack it or go back to map. This is easiest difficulty btw. I spent half of my day to sink or capture Oiseau without avail. Since this is not how a game supposed to work, I must be doing something wrong. Please help me :( I want to enjoy this and show my childhood jewel to my wife, it is uplayable :(

Besides the difficulty setting, you can change many options to make the game more approachable and closer to the original, like using arcade mode instead of realistc and taking a look at the mod settings in the options menu, where you can customize many aspects of the game. For examle you can re-enable bombs, I believe.

Maybe you tried saving during a boarding? you can't do that, but you definitely can save in naval combat, allways save plenty on naval combat! specially before boardings

Seems like you are pretty early in the game, your cannon and accuracy stats must be low, plus the lack of gunner skills. Depending on the distance between ships, if you fire with the autoaim (spacebar) the cannonballs can go higher, passing above the hull either hitting the main mast or just passing by, so basically doing close to no dmg, to fix this, you can aim manually in first person mode or dont shot at the enemy sides (wait to have front, or back shot, so even if the cannons go high, they hit all masts), altough in early game with low caliber guns, low accuracy and small, fast moving targets, its very tiring (the closer you get, the easier it is to actually hit the hull with spacebar)

You could try if you have speed over them, maintain yourself at max range or above, and shot while turning (always cannonballs, chainshots are not worth due loss of range, if you can shot someone with chainshots they have enough range to shoot you back with cannonballs), the ship tilts, so you get more range, and the enemy shouldnt have shots on you, doing this repeatedly should dismast them, allowing you to get closer from a safe angle and fire grapeshot to kill as much crew as posible, this should help you avoid geting killed in mele combat (this tactic may not work with bad accuracy against small targets)

If they are faster than you, use cannonballs(better range) to manually aim to their sails when they go towards you, then sail away and repeat until their sails are damaged enough that you can apply the point above

I definitely can't save. It says "can't save during sailing!" Maybe some realism setting? I actually like to play the game at their hardest settings but this game kicked my butt so hard, I decided to play the easiest :D

Actually I hired a gunner for the battle and my gunner's skill increased from 3 to 5 in a battle which ended with the guy running away from me. So the accuracy was not that bad. I guess it was the fault of 4 pounder pea shooters I had on my ship. Now I traded my ship with a new one and installed 12 pounder corronades, we will see how much a change it will make :) Besides that, I am familiar with naval tactics of the time but I didn't know I should be using cannonballs as well instead of chains to de-mast and de sail a ship. Because those were literally designed to twine around the mast and snip it.

Now I must say I quite enjoy the game except for naval battles. To my luck, a street brawl has occurred in Speightstown just before I sailed away for the first time, while I was rolling on the floor laughing at the carnage unfolding just in front of the main gate, in front of guards and they totally ignore it, I got over my self and looted the dead bodies and got a lot of good loot including a fine German rapier which is a very good sword for early game, I think.

In general thanks for the tips matey :)

"Fast brig"? That's the Interceptor - where did you get that?

Try to reduce the enemy's crew strength and morale by bombarding the ship with grapeshot. Also, practice your melee before going after the Oiseau, and get yourself a decent sword. Both of these can be achieved by going into dungeons, especially the one in Port Royale as it has a very nice sword for you to find.

Get the combat abilities as soon as you can - "Basic Defence", "Advanced defence", "Toughness", "Improved Critical Hit" and ultimately "Professional Fencer".

If you couldn't attack the Oiseau, perhaps it had surrendered? This is a feature of the mod which never existed in the stock game and means you only need to duel the enemy captain, and sometimes you don't even need to do that.

Personally, I always start with the default lugger. It's fast, agile, and sails well across the wind (unlike any brig you care to name, which can sail well with the wind due to its square sails and can't sail well across the wind due to its square sails). I try to stay behind the Oiseau, zigzagging across its stern so I can fire broadsides and it can only fire its stern guns. Or, for preference, find a group of enemy merchants (not escorted merchants and certainly not a group of warships!), pepper them with grapeshot until they surrender, and thereby get myself something significantly bigger than Oiseau.
Maybe you tried saving during a boarding? you can't do that, but you definitely can save in naval combat, allways save plenty on naval combat!
No, you can not save during a naval combat. Occasionally the lead ship of a group surrenders, leading to a bug whereby the entire group goes neutral and then you can save game - in fact, the only current workaround for this bug is to save and then reload, after which all ships which haven't surrendered become hostile again. But in general, once battle has started, you can not save game.

Chainshot is generally better for slowing down an enemy ship. You may be lucky enough to bring down a mast, otherwise chainshot does more damage to the sails and therefore slows the target ship down more.

If you think a German rapier is good, wait till you see a Portuguese Officer's Sword or Back-bladed Sidesword. The former is to be found in the cave part way between Speightstown and Bridgetown, the latter is to be found in Port Royale dungeon.

"Fast brig"? That's the Interceptor - where did you get that?

In the game beginning settings. And I know it was Interceptor so I got it. Yes, I came close to winning with the Lugger first, I had hope until I ran out of cannonballs xD You are right, Interceptor couldn't sail upwind. It actually was going backwards. I traded it with something else and installed 12 pounder carronades. We will see how much a difference it will make.

Thanks for the tip. But what I remember from my childhood is there are undead in the dungeons and really should be avoided early in the game. Anyway, in my previous reply you'll find that I got a pretty good sword and I invested almost 10k into armour so I shouldn't be so fragile.

The ship was only visible in my screen. It was not interactable, not visible on the radar, could not shoot at it.

I sank Oiseau with the help of the Dutch Navy (mostly they sank it actually :D but I helped) and now enjoying the game much more. For now, I am smuggling for money but with the investments I made, I should be able to challenge some ships and capture them or send them to Davy Jones' locker. I am enjoying the game now. Thanks for your reply :)

The stock game populated its dungeons with skeletons and they were indeed tough; I still went into them early in the game in order to earn some experience points and find the hidden sword, and I'd need to save game regularly because I'd get killed often.

The modded game puts regular humans into dungeons and they're relatively easy to defeat. Your main problem with the cave on Barbados will probably not be the thugs in the cave, but the thugs and highwaymen you might meet in the jungle on your way there, as they're tougher than the folks hiding in the cave. Port Royale dungeon, being in a town, has no such problem. Neither does the dungeon in Speightstown, but the sword hidden there isn't as good as the one in Port Royale.

Thanks! But I actually prefer to find them on my own and get surprised :) I will keep this in my mind if the game tends to be difficult tho in melee.

Other useful tip for boarding enemy ships with some chance of success is to stock the Weaponslocker in your cabin with blades, guns, ammo (if you have the ammunition mod enabled), armor and healing items. Your own crewmembers will use them in boardings. By default they use regular cutlasses so anything you find that's better than a cutlass and you don't want to keep for yourself or your officers should go in the weapons locker

Thanks! I'm doing that.

New question: Can I change my officers' equipment?

Thanks :)

...New question: Can I change my officers' equipment?...
Absolutely. Press F2 and just select which officer you want and remove whatever equipment they have that you don't like, give them new ones from your inventory and that's what they'll equip.
