I don't know if it helps or not, but I had run into this problem before the beta2 occationally, but I never really tested it on other versions, so I don't know if it was a continuous problem. I'm still wondering if it has something to do with the characterslots that IncredibleHat had worked on.
 
If only I knew. I have NO idea why this should be happening. IncredibleHat's character slots code was turned off in Beta 1 and, after fixing by Mithrandir, enabled in Beta 2. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />
 
As I said somewhere before, I think its caused by the enemy captain not being generated. Is it possible he is killed in the fight and then the ship surrenders? I don't know how all that is calculated, but if somehow the captain dies before the ship surrenders, then he wouldn't be generated to surrender, thus causing the bug.
Also, I know that there must be some script to have your character walk to the enemy captain. Could that be made so you can walk to the captain as opposed to a script and also have the option not to talk to the captain but rather just take the ship (have the little unlock option)? You wouldn't have all the options of having a captured captain and such if the captain wasn't generated, but it might bypass the error. Hopefully that all made sense. I'm pretty tired right now. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bounce.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":b:" border="0" alt="bounce.gif" />
 
My best understanding of it is, all ships will have a character who is captain. The ships don't exist by themselves, but only as part of a character.

The problem comes in when a "twin character" has to be generated so you have someone to talk to in the dialog. If there aren't any free characters available, you have problems. Apparently the twin character is generated even if you never meet him.

Originally, characters weren't reused, so eventually you'd run out of free space for characters. Hat and Mithrandir fixed it so the captains were reused, and you shouldn't ever run out of free space. If those fixes are in place and working right, you shouldn't be having problems. They seem to be working fine in my game, but I'm still using the September 6 version, with the enemy captain fix added.

Sometimes game behave quite strangely and while one can experience unpleasant problem the others don´t have it. Hmm, then it seems to be exclusive to the Beta 2 as neither of you are using Beta 2.
 
I'll have to check it then. I hope Hook will send me his codebase soon so that I can try and base Beta 3 on his version. Perhaps that would work better. Apparently something went wrong with Beta 2, but I don't really know what that should be. I thought I had put in Hat and Mithrandir's fix properly. good day everyone

i am also having problems boarding.....not just surrendered ships, but even those i sailed up to and boarded. when i boarded a surrendered ship, i had the same error doober reported: seeing only the water with no ships or characters or anything. after figuring this out, i decided to sink the ship instead of boarding it (it was one of those governor's mission to sink a pirate). well, the ship surrendered, but since i discovered i can't board it, i kept shooting so i could sink it, and ended up sinking my reputation as well. also, the spanish, who told me to sink the ship, were now hostile toward me, and when i visited the governor, i could not become allies with them again. this was very troublesome, as you might imagine. i could still recieve missions, but i'd never gain in rank for completing them.

anyways, to explain my other problem. i got another quest from the governor just to see if i could make things work with the spanish, so i went out and attacked the ship and boarded it (my preferred method of sinking pirates, which makes me sad when it messes up). i fought through all the decks, and then i assume the ransack screen was supposed to come up, however, i only got empty ocean again. its not just govern mission ships that this has occurred for either; several ships i have boarded have given me this bug. hopefully a solution can be found.

sorry to complain on my first post. you all have really done a great job of making a relatively old game fun to play. thanks for all the work!

If you go to post #10, Pieter posted the file that will fix that bug, there is still a bug where you can't move upon boarding a surrendered ship, but that should be fixed soon. Just extract the file posted and overwrite the current reinit.c file. this is strange, I've not expierienced this empty ocean bug in Beta2.It
was there earlier, which was reportet by me and I thought fixed!??

Hi all. Two days ago I sent this files to Pieter. If anyone want to test this version (based on latest buil_13.zip) - welcome. Twin generation was changed and working perfect. If we have not free captains_slot, CreateTwinCharacter will return boarding_enemy and player will not meet with captain in cabin, but will fight with enemy crew.
