boarding and fighting

just curious, when a ship surrenders and you board it & you talk to the captain,he challenges you to fight, does he have extremly high hit points?I boarded a MOW and fought this guy for at least 45 mins & threw AT him grenades,12 shots, poisen knives...etc & he won't go down.Got tired & broke alot of good swords, what a bummer so i quit.

well, having calculated all the factors you just mentioned, i have come to this conclusion:

you pretty much suck at swordfighting. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

or you simply didn't do enough damage to compensate with his toughness ability, which is more likely to be the case. i never understood why people have that much trouble with enemies having that ability. i just kill them all the same, without any problems at all. i guess because most people still overestimate the damage their sword does. you need to put more stat points in melee, and you definatly need a better sword. with a decent sword, you don't even need the stat points in melee to kill him.

thanks i'll keep that in mind.Although he must be pretty tough i hit him w/4 grenades & excellent med, brace pistols 12x & after 45 mins swordfighting & hitting him more times then he did me i guess my skill is pretty low

My guess is you didn't hit him frequently enough. If he has the toughness perk, he regenerates his hit points, if you aren't hitting in alot very quickly, he will regenerate his health and keep fighting. The toughness perk can be a real bugger, particularly when he also has high melee.

now that makes sense cause i hit the crap out of the guy but not like you suggested..i'll try that next time thanks

exactly. blocking right after you hit him with your sword cuts down the time between your hits as well, giving you a better chance. blocking cuts off the animation, so each blow takes half the time. swordfighting is certainly your best bet.

I have made the Toughness perk a bit less strong in the Build 14 Alpha versions, I think. I'll probably add that change into a future Build 13 Update as well. In any case: Get yourself a good sword and high melee skills and you should be able to win a one-on-one fight. Although the event you describe really does sound like an exceptional situation where the enemy captain really is strong to the point of being ridiculous. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />
