Well, it's a good thing I have a tutorial for that: http://www.piratesahoy.net/threads/editing-and-exporting-models-with-maya.25280/
You could probably get away with simply importing the mast model, moving the relevant parts back a bit (with vertex selection), and then exporting it back to GM using the procedures explained in the document. Honestly, I think anyone should be able to follow that guide with little trouble, and I'm always available to offer hints and tips.
Wasn't able to install Maya correctly,don't know what went wrong :/ I've tried another possiblity by using QAR's bowspit, but couldn't test it ingame so far
