    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

Mostly working on refining existing details atm. I've added royals, the carronades will have to wait until I can figure out the problem with importing them.

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

I was looking at the Rossiya, trying to work out if you had used an almost completely transparent material or simply left the windows blank ;) Ah well, plan B is simply using darker textures for the insides, adding as much clutter as possible to the open spar portion of the weather deck...

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

Wouldn't be complete without a Nelson chequer version :) Can PotC/CoAS handle semi-transparent materials? Was thinking about using a 25% transparent material facing outwards in the gunports to fake better lighting... The crude lighting model in these games (probably no better than the...

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

Certainly distinctive, and I dare say even elegant... (I stole the water from someone else's sketchup model :D) Thanks for the detailed explanation :) Might do several different paintschemes on this ship then, I like this, but would also like to have an example with the strake carried...

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

Not much progress to report. Been trying to model the capstan and wheel, several abortive attempts later Shannon still lacks them. Been looking for details of how Shannon would have been painted around the time she fought the USS Chesapeake. For the moment I've been using colors from the...

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

Given the upper deck its curved shape. Not sure if its worth modelling the curve for the other decks...

Learning 3D, would like to build ships for Hearts of Oak

Prefer the Napoleonic era, older ships have less interest for me... Looking at those lists, there will be plenty of frigates (mostly large), a variety of ships of the line and a few smaller warships, but an almost complete absence of merchant ships. So I'll probably go with an East Indiaman...

Learning 3D, would like to build ships for Hearts of Oak

Ok, fine :p I'll build a Napoleonic era Indiaman or perhaps a 74 like the Temeraire class instead once the Shannon is in PoTC/AoP. Could go in the other direction too, build something smaller like a Sloop-of-War or Post Ship... Moving the discussion of the Shannon herself back to her own...

More rigging. I'm sure Post Captain will be able to point out if I've gone wrong somewhere ;)

Learning 3D, would like to build ships for Hearts of Oak

I'll bow to your superior knowledge of the subject and accept the Hebe would be a better base for a Pallas class (group?) frigate :) But IMO much easier to adapt the Leda class model for the Lively than start over. Plan would be, ~ model new hull body from plans ~ adjust keel/stem shape ~...

Learning 3D, would like to build ships for Hearts of Oak

Thanks for the title and the replies :) Plan at this stage is to finish Shannon with full exterior detail and any gundeck detail that can be seen from outside the model. At my current level of detail I'm estimating this would take 45-50k tris, so I've got a similar amount to play with for...

Learning 3D, would like to build ships for Hearts of Oak

I enjoy history, have read the Sharpe series, Bolitho series, some of the Ramage books, etc. Played Pirates of the Burning Sea since 2 years ago, drawn by the idea of sailing ships and pirates but the PvP has kept me playing ever since. Downloaded Google Sketchup on an impulse slightly over 3...

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

Thanks, I moved the shrouds down a fraction :) Constitutions diameters should serve, no one will be able to spot the difference between a 22in mast and a 20in mast :D I suspect you already know this, but modelling rigging is a pain...

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

Thanks, but still no luck importing the carronades. :( Found a list of mast and spar diameters for the USS Constitution, I've used those with an inch or two taken off each. Anything I should be doing differently with the shroud placement and tops?

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

Still trying to import the carronades, currently Sketchup returns an error message for a missing material. I've tried putting the tgas in a folder called textures, but no luck yet. Oddly enough the cannon will import, minus the textures but otherwise functional, so I've just painted them brown...

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

I've moved the lower edge of the doubling up to align with the top, added a few inches of separation between mast pieces and given the overall mast a rake of 2 degrees. Overall appearance (I've only adjusted the lower doubling on the mainmast until you confirm this is the right direction)...

    WIP - HMS Shannon (1806) 38 guns

Thanks :) Shannon has her teeth :D Still working out how to get the textures to import with the meshes, but I'm not the patient type xD

Sketchup 8 came out last year, so perhaps the 2011 or 2012 version of FBX? Captain Armstrong, do you mean lower down and following the red line here?
