Water Detail

Hargar

Landlubber
Ok what gives my water detail bar in the graphics option section is turned all the way off and greyed out. Is this a bug?

Could be your video card doesn't have DX9 shader support to display reflections and refractions? Just a guess ...

My card is a ATI Radeon 9600 with 128meg of ram. I seems to recall it as one of the cards recomended for this game. Could be wrong though maybe ya need the 9800.

I am able to run Doom 3 with all the effects on no problem so I am not sure why this game would need more power....

well i have a 9700 pro works fine, so something isnt right your end <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Yup a 9600 is Dx9 compliant and should work fine with pixel shader 2.0.
It sounds like you need to reinstall the drivers again as something is most likely screwed. The good news is that you'll probably get a performance boost as well, seeing as your card is running on 2 cylinders instead of 4.

Running direct x 9.0c and just updated to the latest ATI driver and the game does not like it at all will not even run on it so I had to go back to the older driver that is came out in June of this year. Dang had someone not sent in a screen shot of there ship I would not even know I was getting full effect. lol

Hargar,

I feel for you mate. We've all been there in the past I guess. Take your time and get it sorted. You will get it working eventually and you'll also learn the tips n tricks needed to sort graphic card problems if they arrise in the future.

If you need any further help then ask.

I would recommend using a video card driver cleaner utility to remove any existing entries in there from previous installs (that may be causing the problems).
Try <a href="http://www.omegadrivers.net/" target="_blank">http://www.omegadrivers.net/</a> he includes a driver cleaner and his drivers are faster with better picture quality than standard ATi official drivers.
I've only ever used Omegas drivers since I made the swap from Nvidia to ATi several years ago. I've never had a problem with any of his driver sets.

Moving topic to technical; someone may have an answer for you there! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Oh a 9600, I too have a 9600 XT and it works great, the detail is able to be put up to full. Check all your drivers, maybe even reinstall the game?

At this point I am thinking I need to try several things that have been suggested. Given that I am getting a directx loading error on Pirates when I use the newer ATI driver could mean reinstall direct X, the game or even both after updating the driver. I also like the thought of cleaning the old drivers off the system.

I will try both, but not tonight as I have limited time and there be plundering to do mate.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

OK I know I said I had no time to work on this but I could not let sleeping dogs lie.

Resolved issue through the following steps:
1 Again updated to the latest ATI Driver
2 Reinstalled Direct X
3 (the real kicker) Deleted the config.ini file both in the main directory and the saved game directory. Just changing the settings is not enough you need to delete both files and restart the game.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

On my ATI 9800 Pro it`s also not working...... so doesn`t semm to be a DX9 - issue....

ok - little change: Reinstallation of Direct X helped me ! Now it`s workin` <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

I had a simular problems once with my ATI 9800 pro.....this sounds dumb...but I was told by a wise man to move my sound card into a slot not next to my video card...and it worked fine.

I even called Dell, yes I own a dell or 4, and they told me the same thing after I had fixed it.

Just a idea.

Da doc

I had the same problem with that inactivated water detail slider. Since I knew from 3DMark05 that my graphics card can do T&L and everything, I was desparately looking for a way to convince Pirates! to enhance the water details. In my case the following helped: I've opened the config.`ini-file` (there should be a shortcut in the Pirates!-folder) and changed the "0" in the "water detail" line to a "2". And suddenly, the slider became active!
(Actually, the highest value for water detail is 3).

Maybe this helps also in your case.
